Subject: Whatcha listening to while trainin'?
On my LSD yesterday, had the headphones on for the first time this year... radio ... New song hit at just the right time - driving guitar gave me that lovely endorphin rush where there is no pain, just flowing.

Check out "Dirty Juice" Didja like it? I could picture it in spin class too...

Looking for more motivating songs. Contemplating buying an IPod / MP3 player of some sort, but don't have enough of a library o' music to cut the umbilical to the radio yet. Help me out. (But I'm not really into the "angry" sort o' music.)

I know this subject has been discussed before, and I'd be delighted if ya wanna provide me with links to other lists - I didn't find a whole lot during my searching.

Thanks!

While running, I listen to my breathing and the sound of my feet (making sure I'm not hitting too hard)

While biking, I listen to my gears (mostly my rear derailleur) to make sure they're engaged correctly and also listen to my chain to make sure it never rubs

While swimming, I listen to my hand entry to make sure I'm not slapping too hard and my breathing for no other reason than it's so damn loud.

If you haven't guessed, I never listen to music when I train.  I won't be able to get "motivated" by music during a race so I obtain "inner" motivation and also get used to dealing with the demons during training so they are much less likely to take hold during my races.

"Train like you fight, fight like you train."  (I guess it would be more appropriate to use "race" in this instance)

With regards to cycling, running and swimming - I don't listen to anything. Some loud agro type stuff works well for lifting weights. Ambient stuff when I do my martial arts. And if I'm stuck on the trainer, I listen to some uptempo stuff on the stereo, but quietly enough so that I can hear the whirring from my trainer. Lets me know if I'm all kinds of smooooth. Too much other stuff to pay attention to while I'm working on the "big 3." Besides, like Steve pointed out - you can't race with headphones, so why get accustomed to them?

I listen to my thoughts, no tunes.
The exception is weight training and lately I've been listening to Vivaldi & Strauss.
I keep the tunes for the car.

As I've been told before: "Runners listen to their breath and focus on their pace, joggers listen to headphones and focus on the scenery." Thanks for putting me in my place!! Boy, is my face red! :-p

I certainly don't take myself that seriously. Y'see:

While biking, I listen for traffic and the roar of accelerating pickups when some feller decides he's gonna git him some ROADKILL!

While swimming I listen to the inside of some most excellent silicone earplugs.

Upon occasion, when running a LSD when my only concern with my pace is keeping my HR below 150, I will indulge with some headphones to kill the boredom, but I also have the benefit of a deserted bikepath so I feel relatively safe doing so.

So Steve, after T1, when you're hammering along in your trisuit - Would you then have a "suit" and "Ti"? yuk yuk yuk.

I have a MP3 player and I've found I enjoy listening to music while I run, mostly on a treadmill at my gym right now due to the snow and ice here. There is also a row of TVs in front of all the treadmills where the audio can be picked up on various FM frequencies, but I find if I watch TV while on the treadmill I get dizzy.

I listen to the Venga Boys and what ever else has a up tempo beat. There are certain songs in my rotation such as Maddona's Quicker Than a Ray of Light (I think thats what its called) where I pick up the pace and hold it till the song is over.

I'm not sure about using my MP3 on my bike though, what with all the traffic around.

I was a hardcore, no music while I train, type of guy...until I got an MP3 Player...the first time I ran with it I ran an extra mile without realizing it. I have found I hit the weights much harder and enjoy my workouts on the bike more with some music. My music selection is not classical by any means, it's a mix of:

3 Doors Down [1st Album]
Rage Against the Machine
Godsmack
Prodigy
Tantric
Tool
Live
Sevendust
Soil

  • ..and much more. I'm a believer now: music helps me workout out harder [and I can still feel my heartrate and breathing]

A mush between Hardcore, metal, and trance

Depending in the mode the trance allows u to kinda lose sense of how long you've been on the freakin bike

The metal keeps the tempo when your starting to drag on the run

The hardcore sears your skin and boils your blood just like a 3 hour brick ( I use sparingly when I'm grinding out that last mile, or hour or whenver a serious shot of adrenaline is needed.

    Renee,

I'm glad to see someone else who listens to music from the same era!  I was once told that my cd collection was like and '80s gay bar.  Add to that some disco and the theme from Rocky and you pretty much have my MP3 playlist.

I saw The Cure last summer and will see Elvis Costello on March 5. Yeah, I love the 80s dance music (and 70s). I've got a few good 70s disco cd's too.

I forgot to mention Communards, Gene Loves Jezebel, Revolting Cocks, Love & Rockets, Jesus & Mary Chain... and Shriekback kicks for a good run. My favorite GOYA song has to be 'We Care Alot' (Faith No More).

I have to have music when I run. I used to love running w/ my thoughts/prayers, but now its just doesn't happen. But thats a whole another issue.

I like alittle Linkin Park, JLo, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Good Charlotte, Pat Green's old stuff, Kelly Clarkson, Eminem, Simple Plan, Alan Jackson, Five for Fighting, Alabama, Usher, Bleu Edmondson...

Yeah... I'm all over the place.

But when all else fails, download your favorite book. Ohh, there is nothing like getting lost in a great book!
