Overcast
Total Time = 1h 20m 38s
Overall Rank = 186/344
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 16/22
Pre-race routine:

Had breakfast, packed up the car and left the house at about 11:00. Had a granloa bar and an apple with a bottle of water before the race.
Event warmup:

300m W/U swim to get used to the cold water. 68 F. Not Alcatraz but still fresh without a wetsuit.
Swim
  • 12m 44s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started at the front, right in line with the race lane markers. Found the cable shorly ofter the start and followed it throughtout the race. The only hard part were the wood stairs that they had to bridge you over the run course. I think the timing mat was on the other side of the stairs. This added some time to my swim split. I was 7th out of the water in the field of about 90 that started, the first without a wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Try not to swim so close to the cable as I hit the first big orange ball marking the start of the race lane. not a big deal th
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 time was added to the bike. Opted not to put socks on at this time and just put on my bike shoes. Grabbed a gel, tucked it into my shorts and headed to the mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. In the future maybe try a start with my shoes on the bike. but from what I have seen at the start lines. I ( speaking for myself) could get up to speed just as fast by putting my shoes on in T1.
Bike
  • 37m 47s
  • 20 kms
  • 31.76 km/hr
Comments:

The first two laps were tough. My breathing was off and I was coughing alot. I think it was the started of cold. After I got my breathing underway and took the gel everything fell into place. The last two lapls were good.
What would you do differently?:

Loose about 20 lbs. Benn took some pic of me on the bike and my gut hangs out....a lot. Also 20lbs lighter would help the bike and run.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 added to the run. Transition went well except for the laces in my shoes. 3rd year in a row that I did not untie the lace when setting up. When will I learn. Maybe get some speed laces for futre races.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to untie my laces
Run
  • 30m 18s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 04s  min/km
Comments:

By far my worst of the three event. But I did feel good and did not pull my calve this race. Now if I can get my run times down I will place much, much, better.
What would you do differently?:

Average run for the guy who can not run. Try to work on running this winter.
Post race
Warm down:

Spent the time right after the race looking for Benn as he usually finished the last 500m or so and crosses the finish line with me but this year he got pulled off. The finishers shoot was very crowded and narrow compared to last year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The ability to propel my body forward while wearing running shoes.

I want to see the pics of the race, you must have passed me on the bike or run section!!! I think we had the best of what mother nature had to give compared to the other distances (not too cold not too warm not too windy) I really had a blast. hope you did too...and i also need to run faster

I don't think I passed you.  Your wave started 20 min before mine and the diff is between our race times is  about  14 min.   https://www.marasport.ca/cgi-bin/home.pl?mar_eng/events

Marasport  will have pictures of the race.  I did not see a link on the Esprit website ( they did have one in the past. )

Conrats on your P.R.
