Subject: My favorite inspirational poem
This was posted all over our house when I was a youngster (5 competitive swimmers in my family). My father had part of it stenciled onto our towels.

IF YOU THINK

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't!
If you want to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in the state of the mind.

Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger and faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

Walter D. Wintle

What's your favorite?

Not so much a poem, but a piece of Scripture that I've been chewing on lately:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw of everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perserverance the race marked out for us." --Hebrews 12:1

I'm trying to cast of the "sin that entangles," which isn't just "spiritual" things but eating habits, time-wasters, etc. I'm throwing off everything that hinders, namely the 40+ lbs. that I've had since I left grad school. I'm learning to run for endurance, instead of speed. It's amazing to learn just how different those things are. And, I have found a great cloud of witnesses here at BT who are supportive and encouraging.

Anyway, that's what I'm chewing on right now.

by TE Lawrence:

"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the
dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity:
but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act
their dream with open eyes, to make it possible"

I don't really know why this speaks to me so loudly, it just does.....

Wow, Hawkeye, I really like that bit of scripture. It has urgency and power.

My other motivating poem is a bit dark but gets me at the primal level. The attitude behind it is what propelled me into tri-training. When I feel tired after training, I think of it.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I also like this poem by French poet/ philosopher Guillame Apollinaire:

"Come to the edge."
"We can't.  We're afraid."
"Come to the edge."
"We can't.  We will fall."
"Come to the edge."
And they came.
And he pushed them.
And they flew.

I have this one taped to my bathroom mirror. I don't know who wrote it, but it helps me to remember that in order to get motivated or out of it rut comes from within.

I used to have a Comfort Zone
Where I knew I couldn’t fail
The same four walls of busy work
Were really more like jail.

I longed so much to do the things
I’d never done before,
But I stayed inside my Comfort Zone
And paced the same old floor.

I said it didn’t matter,
That I wasn’t doing much
I said I didn’t care for things
Like diamonds, furs and such.

I claimed to be so busy
With the things inside my zone,
But deep inside I longed for
Something special of my own.

I couldn’t let my life go by,
Just watching others win.
I held my breath and stepped outside
And let the change begin.

I took a step and with new strength
I’d never felt before,
I kissed my Comfort Zone "goodbye"
And closed and locked the door.

If you are in a Comfort Zone,
Afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners were
At one time filled with doubt.

A step or two and words of praise,
Can make your dreams come true.
Greet your future with a smile,
Success is there for you!

Subject: Don't Quit

"Don't Quit" has been a family favorite since I was a kid.  My mom had it on a plaque in the "Hall of Fame", a place in our house where my parents put up our certificates, awards, and trophies.  My brother kept in on a little piece of paper inside his football helmet during high school.  During games, we would see him take that slip of paper out, look at it, and put it back in place.  He went on to play college ball at Idaho State University, a bit on the small side for an inside linebacker, he still holds records for most tackles in the conference.  We've all carried it with us through life, thanks to our mom.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow -
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt -
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.
