Subject: Stone Mountain Closed to Bikes - Paving

Got some info from a fellow rider that the bike loop through Stone Mountain is closed off to bikes right now due to paving.

Edited to add - Apparently they have undertaken a huge paving project which sounds like they are repaving everything but the rock.  The project will be completed in phases and will last through November.  The only way to know if the roads are being re-paved or if parking lots are being repaved that day is to ask before you go- he said it probably won't be noted on their website (although he agreed that it would be a good idea)...The fellow at this number , 770-498-5690, was somewhat helpful.  It sounds like Robert E. Lee is supposed to be completed by 10/8.

Ok - more info

My question to them was; 'If a car can still go around @ 35mph while they pave, why can't a bike go too?".  He said  that he does not have a good answer for that.  Bureaucracy!

could be that there's more debris when paving...stuff that won't hinder a car, but could pose a risk to a cyclist? eh, who knows...

I was out there last night and they have finished the inner loop and the PATH entrance should be open again.  Lots-o-bikes last evening.

The current paving is on half of Stonewall Jackson Dr.; say from Evergreen Resort and Conference Center to where it ties in with the inner loop.  If you ever use the boat ramp parking area that is there they are also redoing it.

Enjoy!!!
