Subject: High Heart Rate While Running
Hi everyone, I had my last race of the season 14th September and for the last few weeks I have cut down my tri training. I planned this mini break to give myself time to get back into my weight training which has suffered dramatically since starting this tri stuff 11 months ago. (I know weight training won't make me quicker but I trained for 4 years previous to this year and am trying to get a bit of definition back. I am hoping it will make me look better in the lycra. LOL.) (Red sarcasm font not working!)

Anyway, I have noticed that during my runs over the last few weeks my heart rate is very high and I have to run really slow to keep it in zone 2. Even when it is high though I don't feel fatigued. I figure this may be down to the weight training. It can't be over training as I have been taking it quite easy lately.

I plan on begining my winter training next week with a focus on increasing my running volume to race faster next year.

Any thoughts on the high heart rate? Should I just ignore it?

My opinion is that you should ignore it, assuming that you feel like you're not pushing too hard, and that you are able to pay attention to your body enough to determine if you need to back off or not.

Why do you think your HR is high?  How did you determine your zones?

When was the last time you determined your zones?  I've read you should re-test a couple times a year.

forget zones.  What is high?  Is it racing out of control or is it just higher then usual for a particular pace?

Remember HR is not just a function of effort/fitness.  Hydration, humidity, heat, nutrition, medication, ect... can influence it a great deal.

Until you settle back into a regular running pattern, I would run by feel.  Don't ignore your HR, as in don't keep running with it super high just because you used to be able to run that pace.  Instead run as hard as is comfortable, and if the problem persists, or if your HR is really spiking go see your doc.

Thanks for the replies. Last did a LT test back in June so not too long ago. It isn't spiking just slightly higher than normal. The question was scientific interest really. It's not going to change my training.
