Comments: Somedays you have good days and some days you have bad days. mile 18 everything was hurting. I usually take some ibuprophen before a race but this time I did not. I did not want to take too much during the day because I wanted it for later in the day. I was down to a walk at 18 mile mark. My hip flexors were killing me. Even 2 days later I a really sore spot on that muscle. Mile 25 I took some happy drugs and I sat down for awhile. I was in alot of pain and tired. I sat for about 5 - 8 minutes. I talked to the RD and he said I could turn around at the 50k turn around on the 3rd loop if I wanted to drop back to the 50k. Several 50 milers tend to drop at the 50k mark. Usuauly for them its at the 33 mile mark and not the 37 mile mark. I was on pace to finish the 50 miler but it was going to be a race against the clock. I really needed to start more than 45 minutes early. I needed about 1.5 hours which would gave me a 12.5 hour finishing time. I stood at the 50k turn around line looking at it and deciding that my 72 hour race was more important than potentially finishing a 50 miler that day. I turned around at the 50k mark and pushed myself to see if I could beat my unofficial 50k PR. I missed it by 10 minutes. Needless to say if I had drugs earlier I could have ran and broken it easy. I think if I planned on the 50k I would sub 7. If I pushed too much more I think there is a good chance I might be injured for awhile instead of being able to get back training 2 days later. 50k (31) unoffical time - 7:39 finished 36.5 miles - 9:00 Once I finished the 50k I did not care about my time. I go down as a finisher no matter if I came in at 7:40 or 10:20. What would you do differently?: Not much. RD gave me my cool 0 bib number and that is the main thing I wanted. I did not think I would finish the 50 that days and I have not struggled that bad even early on for a long long time. I think my PR at Chicago took more out of me that I knew. Post race
Warm down: walked 6 miles :) What limited your ability to perform faster: tight muscles. stretched all week but it was not good enough. Event comments: I liked the race. I wonder if they got too many medals laying around or what. They were giving out spring 50k medals for the 50k and the 50/50 for the 50 milers. Either they are cleaning out there old stock or too cheap to get 50/50 medals for everyone because they bought the 50k in bulk. Hopely that will improve but other than that its one of the races I look forward to every year and I will hopely do it every year. It really is a great race. I jsut need to put the date on the back so I know which race that was for since its just like my spring 50k medal. 50k (31) unoffical time - 7:39 finished 36.5 miles - 9:00 Last updated: 2008-10-29 12:00 AM
