Today, I swam 1500 yds at 2:22 pace/100yds.  This equals about a 50 min 1.2 mile split.  For the about the 4th time swimming for the start of my season is this a good time.  Can it be improved tremendously by June 14.  Where do you think I would fall with a time of 50 min.  Now its only my 4th swimming practice so I know I can improve.

The past results of the race for which you're training is probably online with swim splits.

Of course it can be improved.  The question is how often you are going to get to the pool and do you have anyone coaching you or helping with your technique.  I started swimming in January and probably would of taken more then an hour to swim 1.2 miles if I didn't drown first.  Now I easily swim 2 miles straight in less then an hour.  Just takes a lot of time in the water.

To answer your questions:

NO it is not a good time.

YES it can be improved tremendously with the right training

You would be in the last %25 in a race with a time of 50 minutes.

At least for Vineman, a 50 min 1.2 mile split would not be last in the swim in the Male 40-45 Age Group. 3rd to last out of a couple hundred, but not last. It happened to a ... friend... yeah.... friend... of mine.

As long as you keep on doing 3 or 4 swims a week, building up your distance and working on your technique, you will get better. Just in the past 4 months, I've gone from being able to maintain a 3:00 100 meter to a 2:45 100 meter on a 4000 m swim. Still not fast, but an improvement.

50min for 1.2 miles is good enough to make the cutoff.

If you want to be competitive then you're looking at 30-35min (generally).

I agree, it all depends on what your overall goal is.  I swim 2x a week right now for 1 - 1.5 hours, so I am averaging 5,000 - 6,000 yards a week.  When I start training next Spring for IMFL I will add a third swim each week.  I did Longhorn this year and did the swim in 38:39 and it was short, so if you add 5 minutes to that time, I would have finished in 44:00ish minutes, which was in the bottom quarter of my age group.

I swim with a Masters Group and while I feel like I will continue to get faster, I might be able to make it to the middle of the pack, I can't see myself ever being competitive on the swim leg.

In response to DoublePlay: Wow.

Could you be a little more condescending?!?!?

It's responses like that that are why people think triathletes and runners are pretentious a-holes.

Perhaps a huge grudge resurfaced??  I was looking at that, too, and wondering.
