the crouse is around OSU/just off of it, dead flat, lots of turns on the bike (two 6 mile loops).

aside from corners you can pretty much stay in the same gear the whole time. run is flat and fast, just under 5k (3miles i think is what it was). swim is in the AWESOME osu pool. 10 or 12 feet deep, 50m, and cystal clear.

Thanks for the info.  This sounds like the perfect event for my first tri.

if you drive that course any time but the early morning it is going to seem insane. the traffic in the morning in monitored by cops at the intersection (race day), and there is VERY little morning traffic

Do I need to worry about getting locked out of the OSU tri?  Is there a limit on the number of people who can compete in the OSU tri?  I am planning to do that as my first tri and register for it closer to race day, but I don't want to miss out if there is a limit.

 Thanks

I don't know of any limit but if you don't want to risk not getting a spot then register now. I went on Active.com and registered today. It's quick and farly painless. Anyway, once you pay your money you might as well do the training and race then thing. I find being registered for a race really helps with motivation.

of there is a limit it will say on the HFPracing.com site.

most of their races dont have limits but a few do due to space available.

Ok So I was looking at the results from last year and there was a guy that raced it and did the bike in 22 minutes. That is wicked fast how is the even possible?

Also I am new to this sport and I was wondering if you can wear your ipod on the bike and the run?

will try and answer all questions.

ipods are no.

as far as the bike times go, anything much faster than myself or ryan bates did were either epople that quit and came back, or only did one loop and dropped out or had their results DQ'ed. the timing chip still picks up their times when they come back.

as far as what to wear, on the bottom you will want to race in tri shorts (think slightly thicker jammers (maybe a bit shorter), that have a very thin fleece pad in them for the bike). you can swim, bike and run in these. they wont absorb much water and dry in a matter of min. thin enough to run in, and good for swimmer. on the top, its more up to you, i raced that one last year topless, and just went with the shorts. you can put something on after, or swim in a tri top for the hwole race (similar to a two peice fastskin).

OK, so I'm clearly not a guy (I hope my pic makes it obvious), but I just want to times 2 about the tri shorts and shirt.  Though most people don't have the complete set of gadgets or gear their first race, including me, the one regret I have is not using a tri suit (can be 1-piece or separates).  I used a 2-peice during my second one and it was totally awesome not to have to fidget with all those other clothes.

Get your bare minimum stuff (bike, helmet, running shoes, swim shorts), but if you can swing it, check out the tri suit.

FWIW.

Awesome! Yea I figured the tri shorts for sure. But I wasnt sure if you could race without a shirt or not. I also figured you couldnt race with an ipod but thought it was worth a shot.....

As far as the bike there was a guy that finished it in 22min that is crazy fast. What was your average speed throughout the course?

The only article of clothing that is a must is a pair of tri shorts. If you're a cyclist and your boys can take it you may be able to get away with a swimsuit only but I would not recommend it. My first race I wore a pair of tri shorts and after the swim put on a regular tee shirt. It worked fine. I wouldn't drop the coin on anything more than a pair of tri shorts until you're sure you want to do more than just this one race. Also, don't forget your helmet-you can't race without one.

i ave 23 on that course (LOTS OF TURNS!!!!, something like 16 per 6 mile loop).

the winner ave 24. that time is from someone that dropped out or did not do both loops, that would put them over 30mph.

i am normally in the top 2 bike splits in sprint races, and in the flat, striaght ones am not over 25.5 or so.

look at a pair of tri shorts, and maybe a tri top if you have the cash.
shirts are not needed for any race in ohio that i know of. FWIW till this season i raced shirtless in any sprint with a pool swim. this year i need to have sponsors on the top so i kinda have to leave it on, but would otherwise race without in the pool ones.

Oops meant to post this here but I started a new thread....

Hi Everyone,

I am going to do the osu tri as my first ever triathalon.  I've been a runner and that's been my only sport.

I was wondering about the bikes people use for the races.  After researching tri bikes I don't know if I want to spend the $ on my first race in case it is my last!  I have a hybrid mountain/road bike.  Can I use that kind of a bike - or what are your thoughts?

Thanks for any advice!

All type of bikes show up from your garage sale finds to 1000's of $ bikes and everywhere in between. There is usually a mountain bike division.

Congratulations on picking up this sport.  It's just incredible.  I rode on a friend's bike that she bought at Meijer's a few years ago for my first two races.  Just get some wheels - any wheels at this point - and prepare to have the time of your life!

Thanks!  That helps ease my mind about that.  I am excited and really nervous about doing my first one.  The indoor pool swim attracted me to this one.

you'll have a blast. this is a very easy course, and a ton of fun because of the location.

you will see a whole range of people, and a lot on bikes that they simply use to get around campus. if you want, go for the bike, but dont feel like you need to for this race. many many people simply ride whatever they have, and there is nothing wrong with that.

come on out, have fun, and see what the sport is all about.
