Tom,

Those rides sound awesome!  I wish I lived over that way sometimes...  BTW, I'm sorry we didn't get together in Boise, too.  That would have been nice.  If any of you are over island way, I hope you'll give me a call.  JD, are you still planning to come out in October?

Will

I may be in hawaii in October, family vacation.  If we go, it will be to Maui.

Which island are you on?

Yeah, I think you're fully sucked in now... Laughing You do have to set your priorities and do things that YOU are interested in. That's what keeps it fun. I'll be watching to see how the Death Ride goes, I'm sure you'll get through all 5 if you set your mind on it.

I'm ready to get racing myself again, signed up for a tri in July that is somewhat in between Sprint and Oly with some good hills on the bike (23 miles). And I'll be doing it on my new Cervelo P2, which I'm pretty excited to finally be riding.

Happy to stay in touch, I enjoy hearing about how folks are doing and sharing a few of the things I'm doing as well.

PS: It's been over 100 degrees here nearly every day, so I am not quite as excited about summer as usual!

Congratulations Tom, from the race report it seems like you had a terrific ride! That's cruel to have that last pass go right by the start line, though   Great job on getting through all 5 passes!!!

That's coming up quick. Sure are a lot of milestones for you this year!

I have a short triathlon this weekend (between a Sprint and Olympic), so took it easy last couple days. After this triathlon, I start counting down to the Redman IM in September.

Not too much action here lately...how's everybody doing?
I did my 18 mile run today...I'll do my 20 miler next Sat then taper down for the Mesa Falls MF, my first. And I thought the 18 miler wasn't fun!!

Hey Tom, really really tired of the 100 degree weather day after day; but other than that things are going well. I got 3rd in AG in that tri I did last week, and this past weekend was back into IM training mode.

Got any questions or concerns about that full marathon?

Nice going on 3rd place JD..it's been real hot here too..I think I'm doing ok on my FM training...my 20 mi run is this Sat. I think I have my hydration and nutrition pretty well dialed in..thighs were sore x2 days after my 18mi last week..stretching more after might help...I love my ice packs..I'm trying to get the shorter runs in during the week but it's getting hard with summer activities and all..I'm doing my cross training on my MB now..sure feels great to be on the trails again...I won't be doing the Emmett Tri next week...too much else going on and I want to concentrate on the marathon..............Tom

Hey JD...I have a question for you...I asked the site web master but never got a reply...why don't they calculate your running pace in minutes and seconds, rather than minutes and fraction of a minute?

Hey Tom, I don't know other than it might be a little more straightforward math to do the fraction. Pretty easy to multiply that by 60 and get the seconds, so not sure why they didn't do that (most people do look at run times with seconds and not fractions).

BTW: I highly recommend working hard to get those midweek runs in. The more overall mileage you are doing, the less taxing the long runs are going to be on your body. Not a ton of time left before the marathon, but get in what you can during the week. I usually try to keep within the 50% guideline; which is that your longest run should not be more than 50% of your total weekly volume.

Good luck on the 20 miler tomorrow, and yes... ice packs afterward are fantastic!

Thanks for the advice JD..esp. on the 50% rule...hadn't heard that...I'll get those shorter runs in..it's just that my mountain bike keeps calling my name!! I've been doing some bike/run bricks...I just cut the trail ride a bit short sometimes. It really is good to have a race coming up, even though I do them just to do them, not to be competitive...it helps keep me motivated to get out.............Tom

I got my 20 miler inthis morning..felt good..the last 2-3 miles were "mental" miles. I've got my nutrition figured out..need to drink a bit more..I'm using my own drink in a hydration pack..I'll still drink at every water station...I CAN DO THIS!!

Nice!!! Laughing  If you got a good 20 in, you'll be OK on the marathon. Just think, you'll be running on fresh legs!

JD,

If you're still checking in here, I want to say thanks for the support and insight this year.  I took a couple months away from the training for travel and home improvement projects (which sometimes require as much or more endurance than any triathlon).  I'm looking forward to next season after a few adjustments to try to stave off mental and physical exhaustion...  You'll do well as a coach.  Keep it up!
