Port Huron, Michigan
United States
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 23m 4s
Overall Rank = 9/56
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/7
Pre-race routine:

Had a little over 90 minute drive to Port Huron, left around 4.15am, registration and transition were opening at 6am. Got there around 6.20 or so, plenty of time to prepare

Did not know my start wave until I got there, turned out that I was in the first wave

I had two bowls of cereal at home plus a gatorade, on the drive I had two bars, two large Red Bulls and a medium coffee. In hindsight, I think that I had too much to eat
Event warmup:

Just a little stretching
Swim
  • 19m 24s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Did not even realize how the leader group pulled away, and everybody else stayed back so By the first buoy I was all by myself, I like that better anyway

The swim itself was great, the water temp was perfect, and the water great

Coming out of the water was difficult, started walking but the water was still too deep so I went back to swimming
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, maybe simply swim longer
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Was in the second to last row of bikes, very good!
Suit stuck a little, had trouble balancing

Took one gel and some gatorade

What would you do differently?:

Go faster!!!!
Bike
  • 1h 12m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Very cool race, I was very surprised to see at the turnaround, that I was in 6th place, by that time I had passed 2 people and had been passed twice. Before the end of the bike three more people had passed me so I was in 9th place

The course was slightly uphill and with headwind on the way out, so back in was fast

Around mile 5 I started to feel some slight stomach discomfort, got it under control by drinking less, felt okay then but should come back pretty strongly later in the run...
What would you do differently?:

Eat less before the race, I think that was the cause for the stomach problems
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Took one gel and a sip of gatorade
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Run
  • 47m 55s
  • 5.9 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Started on a 8mpm pace and kept that until mile 4.
Got passed once and passed one person myself. On the way back I passed another runner (in my age group), but then the stomach problems began around mile 4. Had to slow down to approx 8:30-8:45 pace and was just happy that I could keep going. Luckily, nobody else passed me in that last phase
What would you do differently?:

Not sure where the stomach problems came from, probably from too much food in the morning!
Post race
Warm down:

pizza, melon, water and gatorade

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach problems

Event comments:

Overall a good race, organization turned out better than the pre-race email confusion was suggesting
