what do you carry?

our deductible is $500 on everything except property damage which is 250.... Our bill just went up $8 a month and thats w/o any accidents or claims in 1 year.

I'm thinking maybe of raising ours.... not that we have 1000 laying aroung though in event we need it.  We could get it but it's not just readily available to us.

$500 comprehensive
$1000 collision

The higher you raise your collision deductible, the more your premium will come down.  Comprehensive doesn't as have much of an impact.  I keep the collision deductible high because I wouldn't turn a small, at fault, collision claim into my insurance carrier anyway.

Depending on your state, most carriers are going to look at 3-5 years of claim and driving record history.

I would say if you can save $1000 then raise the deductible.  If you only have $500 then keep it where it is.

Do a cost benefit analysis.  If it saves you $25/month to raise it, what can/will you do with that.  What's the 'risk'?

Ours is at $1,000 and we could replace both of our cars right now with the cash reserves we have. Insurance at this point just protects us if we were to damage another's property or injure someone [including ourselves].

Think about it this way: If you had a minor collision and the damage was was only to your own property at $750, would you call your insurance company? What about $1,000? If you wouldn't, then raise the deductible. For us, it's gotta be worth it in order to call and wake the sleeping giant that is the insurance company. Oh, and we're accident & ticket-free for over 3 years, both 25 y/o and older.

The most cost effective deductibles are $100 comp and $500 collision.

I came to this figure based on average claim frequency and savings per year ...

say you change you comp ded fro $100 to $500, saving $4 per month while increasing your loss exposure to $400 more.

$48/$400

If you have one claim every 8.33 years, you will break even on the savings.  I have had 3 comp claims in the last 6 years.  I would have lost my if I had a $500 deductible.
