Cape Girardeau, Missouri
United States
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 9h 00m
Overall Rank = unsure/
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/22
Pre-race routine:

Camping in camper in state park with the family.
Event warmup:

2 double shots of expresso.
Swim
  • 17m 40s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not sure about overall rank (not too good though). I couldn't get into a steady rhythm until I was on the way back. Overall though I felt pretty good about the swim and came out of the water with plenty of energy.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more. I only swam twice this year! This was also my first lake swim. I'm usually a pretty strong swimmer though.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Pretty steep uphill at the point where we got on the bikes--people falling over etc.
What would you do differently?:

Some people had 5 gallon buckets they sat on during transition--seems like a good idea.
Bike
  • 58m 40s
  • 15 miles
  • 15.34 mile/hr
Comments:

not sure on the ranking--again, not good. I could've pushed it a lot harder on the bike but I am a terrible runner and need to save something for the run
What would you do differently?:

Uh--nothing outside of training more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

didn't know about riding with feet on top of shoes. Thanks.
What would you do differently?:

I really wasn't in a hurry with this triathlon. I didn't have any body I was competing with (a long way from Kansas City) and hadn't done one a tri this long before, so I had a "just finish" mindset. Unfortunately I finished in 2:00:43. I could have easily shaved off 44 seconds off my transition times to finish in 1:59:59. Then I could say, "My time? Oh, an hour and something."
Run
  • 41m 52s
  • 4 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

As above
What would you do differently?:

Either get emotionally comfortable running 10 minute miles or lose weight.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

20 pounds of fat. And I didn't know about that pedaling with feet on top of shoes thing.

Event comments:

Race was well organized and fun. After the race a great lunch was provided.

Course: Initially quite hilly--all up it seemed. There was a portion out on the highway which was pretty windy. Also a steep hill at about mile 10-11. Lots of people off to the side walking their bikes. One guy was just sitting at the base of the hill looking tired and encouraging others.

Course: The good news is that the last 2 or 2.5 miles are downhill. That was great, but, the preceeding uphill course, although gradual, was hard for my lumbering Clydesdale frame. The first mile especially was too heart-thumping and I had to really slow down.
