This morning I went for my usual 2.35m run. I kept a pretty good non-stop pace for me for the first mile, but I had to slow to a walk several times during the remainder to rest.

This evening I wanted to tackle that same 2.35m run. I did the ENTIRE 2.35m run without stopping. For me, it was a somewhat emotional experience since I have never run(jogged really) this distance non-stop before. It is impossible for me to relate to you how elated I was when I completed the run--so much so that it brought tears to my eyes. It was a moving and personal victory for me.

I came back to Earth with a thud when I looked at my watch and saw that I had only improved my time from this morning by a mere 30 seconds. A minor disappointment in my moment of triumph.

I just thought I would share with you here since many of you have been my inspiration to press on. Thank you everyone.

Don't worry - you're doing the right thing! It's not the time it takes, but the time you put in that counts. Believe, at this level, slow and steady wins the long-term goal of better times and more endurance. Believe it - both are just ahead if you persist! Congratulations!

You're not a sissy. You're a freakin' rock star. Realize and be proud of the fact that you ran farther than about 97% of the people around you could even imagine. I'm proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself.

No, if you're just starting to run this kind of distance, I have one firm bit of advice. TAKE OFF THE WATCH! Really, until you can comfortably run this distance without stopping on even bad days, you're kidding yourself if you're concerned with the time. Concentrate on running within your aerobic capability, and keeping your heartrate (percieved exertion) to a comfortable range. At this stage in your training, that's way more important than the time it takes you.

Way to go.

Congradulations!

It is not about the time it is about the personal victory! You set out to make the distence and you did it. Rejoice!
The speed will come in time, but you earned the the feeling of accomplishment.

I was so stoked when I ran my first 5km loop with out stopping, I was beaming and jumpin about my apartment. (I think you have to be a runner to get it)

Way to go!

Monty

That is what you are!!

If you just started that is AWESOME!! Your body and heart are making so many positive changes! Your heart is becoming stronger and more efficent! Your body is actually building more bloss vessels thru your muscles! Soon you will be a running machine!! Be patient with your body! Be proud of what you did! You have every reason to be!

I remember when I made an accomplishment like that! I was ready to cry myself. I was beaming for hours! And there wasnt anyone that could relate at the time- but that didnt stop me from telling everyone anyways!!

Rock on!!

Great job! Also, remember...there is nothing wrong with taking walk breaks during runs...in fact, many training programs recommend this, especially for people newer to running. I was training for a marathon last year with a group (was never able to complete it though due to a stress fracture) and our group would run 10 min then walk 1 min. People that did this actually had faster times than many of those trying to run nonstop. So...even if you have to take walk breaks here and there...it's OK!

Hey man!

No way you are a sissy!!! You see it the wrong way. You pushed and shifted your limit twice. Running non-stop AND improving your time. You should be twice as proud on your achievement!!!
Now keep up the good work and let us know when new (personal)records are broken.

Was this your "golf course" run? 2.35 miles must be about 9 holes, right? That's tough running. congratulations! It won't be long before you can do the back nine too!

This is what its all about! Way to go!

I have to agree w/ Bro. leave the watch at home, just work on keeping your HR in your target zone and run or run/walk the distance. So your time will decrease over the same distance and your HR will remain the same (or lower abit) which show cardiac improvement, base building.

Also of note here, you did this same run twice in one day? What kind of sissy punches out double runs. Couldn't agree more with the heart rate training idea. Build the base and the time will come.
