Subject: Good Flat Bike routes in KC area
Hey all! I had my knee scoped last week and have been given the clear to ride outside, as long as it's flat. Unfortunately, where I am is nothing but back to back hills. Does anyone know a good route that is mostly flat in the NE Kansas/KC area? thanks!

If you head to Southern JoCo there are some "flatter" areas, but not flat.  175th street is a good one, as well at metcalf from 175 towards Louisburg.  Again- these are not Flat, but have few big hills, mostly rollers.

Go to the New Century Airport in Gardner, KS. There is a very flat road that run N/S from the west side of the airport to 151st. I think it is called New Century Parkway, the local bike racers do TT's there spring through fall.

Just make sure you don't take 135th west out of Olathe to get there if you are looking to avoid hills.

There's a monster hill that's great for hill training, so nothing that could be considered flat. It's actually a long down and up that bottoms out at a bridge over some creek or another.

I think New Century Parkway is about 6 miles round trip, give or take. Not much traffic on weekends and I remember it being pretty much devoid of stop signs/lights.

I have done some TT's on the loop, no stop sign/lights and very flat. Park at  Embarq at the south end of the loop if you drive.

I will second the 175th street option, not totally flat but the hill are very minor rollers. This road also has very wide smooth shoulders and a lot of cyclists use it, so from my experience, drivers are pretty aware of cyclist on the road.  I also ride a lot out west  by New Century, here is a good 9 mile loop that I see a lot of TT riders on, http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ks/olathe/697706574,it is a little farther west again, a few rollers but no major climbs.

Well, you said NE Kansas/KC area, so not completely sure where you are, but I live in Liberty, and frequently will take MO 210 and part of Old 210 from Liberty east to Orrick, Richmond, etc.  The stretch to Orrick is very flat (only 1 hill really in Missouri City) as long as you stay on the shoulder of the state highway.  Most of it parallels a set of railroad tracks (in use), and I want to say that typically keeps the grade at 3% or less.

When I want hills, I just take the county roads in the same area, and whine a lot.  :D

If you can stand riding 1-3 mile loops then find an industrial park in your area. Most of these are relatively flat to accomodate the trucks. Traffic in them is very light.

There's always the loop around the downtown airport.  A lot of cyclists seem to like this spot but it bores me out of my skull!!  It is flat though, except for one very short very small rise.
