The LITH Tri isn't all that bad.  The name is worse than the hills really are. There are a few hills on the bike ride that will hurt a little and one right before the turn around on the run.

This one is easier than my first in Galena!

The end of the bike is a blast. I think it's about a mile-long road, straight, slightly downhill. A couple years ago I got up to about 35 while racing some dude into T2. The run is NOT a 5K, FYI. I thought it was so at the mile 3 marker I took off into a dead sprint. About 0.9 mile later I finally crossed the finish line and nearly yakked.

ahh, Galena...great hills out of EACH transition area. Going back for more this year!

I'm sadistic and like the hills.  The bike portion in Galena didn't seem as bad as I expected.  It was the monster hill coming out of T2 that killed me.   This year I'm going to conquer it!!

I also bought a wet suit just for this race because the water was a bit nippy last year!  I was warned but thought I would tough it out.  When your 1 of 4 people without a wetsuit, there is something wrong!

The race is great.  The hills aren't too bad.  This was my first race two years ago and I was on a road bike, last year a Tri Bike.  Ride what makes you comfortable.  As long as you have trained it doesn't make a difference. IMO

I like this race. I've done it the last 2 years (last year was in the rain). I'm going to miss it this year. I'm doing the skirt chaser the night before, and don't really want to wake up that early the next day.

Lots of beginners, it will be fine as your first tri.

It's well run, even though I don't really like having 2 transition areas.

Bangs lake/Wauconda tris are also good ones.

hi,
I've been doing quite a few 5k and 10k and have been doing some biking and swimming and think I'm ready to seriously consider doing my first sprint tri.  My question is where can I train for the swimming in the Lake in the Hills area?  At the main lake/beach?  I thought I had heard there were specific nights that people came there and trained.  Any information anyone has on hints how I can get started training on the swim portion would help.  Also, how long would I need to train before my first sprint?  Could I still do one later in July or August if I start now?

Thanks for any help.
