Okay, so I wasn't technically barefoot but by the time I made it back home my socks were worn through so it was close enough.

I decided that since I have a duathlon coming up in 2 weeks that I might as well start doing some bike/run bricks. So I gathered my gear and set out for a nice 50min bike followed by a 30min run. The temp was heading south of 50 since the sun was going down but once I got spinning I figured I'd be fine. I got a nice 10min warm-up through the neighborhood and started to work the 3 mile loop I planned to spend the next 30min on. About 2 miles into the first loop something doesn't feel right. Sure enough...flat tire. No tube/tools/pump with me so I'm officially f*cked. Well, nothing left to do but hike home. I get about 5 min along (socks only remember) and I hear "need a tube?". This guy happened to be in his yard and saw me walking by with my back tire squeeking all the way. Got a 700/23 I ask...he sure did, along with a pump and a tire lever. Too good to be true? You bet. After getting the tube changed I realized that the valve stem wasn't long enough to make it through my deep section wheel and I had no way to get the pump on it. So close yet so far away! So I walked on. 40min later and I was home. Luckily my trusty cycle computer kept track of the distance and my fancy HRM logged every beat. It would have been a real bummer not to be able to record this fantastic workout in my training log (note the sarcasm in my voice). So here are the stats:

1 hour 5 min, 7.5 miles, 6.6mph average speed, 102bpm avg, 151bpm max

I considered going for a run when I made it back home but by then my feet were sore, it was cold, and I was pissed. Next stop...order a saddle bag and Co2 pump ASAP.

You wait until two weeks before your race to START doing bricks?

You ride without a spare?

Do you read any of the posts on here?

Probably makes the swim training look a lot more attractive!

Sorry about your bad luck, but what a great neighbor! Do you guys have any group rides planned after your bonding experience?

Well, I'm in fairly early base training...only about 2 months in so far. The Duathlon is just something to do...certainly not a "race" as far as I'm considering it. It's also a short event...1k/20k/5k I thin so it should be an easy day. I won't be ready to really race for another 2-3 months. I've never carried a spare on my road bike and have never had a flat...almost 2 years. I just never had any motivation to get a pack and pump to carry. Now I have that motivation

I've had some similar experiences recently. Not one but two flats....only carried one spare....walked home in the rain about 4 miles. Consider two spare tubes if going far from home. Also recently did a dual for some race experience. Do yourself a big favor and do a couple of bricks. I didn't and paid for it.

good luck

Hm, I did a 7 mile bike and 2 mile (ah hem) jog last night. It's the first time I've run after biking. I must say it didn't feel good. I'm new to biking and my legs were shot. But I suffered through it not caring about my time and next time it will be easier. And my dog got to go too, so it wasn't a total waste.

While I was on the bike I was paranoid that I was going to get a flat b/c I don't have anything to do repairs. Your post encourages me to pony up the bucks and remedy that.

Unless you like walking I was lucky that I wasn't on a long ride where I could have been 10+ miles out.

I guess that's where a cell phone and a buddy/spouse come in handy.

Yeah...just more crap to carry though. I started carrying my cell phone on my Mt. bike a few years ago after I took a fall and took an ambulance ride to the hospital with a blown-out elbow. But I usually mt. bike with a backpack since I might be miles back in the woods with no sign of other people.
