Some people just take things too literally. Really? You think that he thinks "our only hope is higher taxes"? Why would you assume the rest is literally meant too? Try settling down for a minute. Um, he DIDN'T use the sarc font, and I wasn't the only one who didn't think he was kidding. Oddly, I see you didn't jump down that poster's throat. Yeah, he didn't use the sarc font. Because the sarcasm was clear. Some of us didn't get that. Sorry for "jumping down your throat" as you suggest. I repeat: try settling down for a minute. Not everybody is out to getcha! |

I don't think he was either kidding or being sarcastic per se. I think he was trying to make a point. Sucks to be part of the group being targeted doesn't it. Actually, I don't currently have a gym membership, because with tri training, I don't need one. Nor do I live in NY State. If you are implying that I am one of the "gym elite richy-riches" you'd be far from correct. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() New Jersey taxes its health club memberships. It was something that started two or three years ago. I don't remember the specifics of how it went down, but I do recall that it happened late in the year. Because I had paid for my membership in full at the beginning of the year (when the sales tax didn't exist), I received a bill at the end of the year for the tax I owed on the $250ish membership purchase I had made 10 months earlier. |

That's weird... did they charge you back taxes for the previous years also? Or did they not want to look that greedy? Seems like you might have been able to contest it. Then again, the amount might not have been worth the fight... What a crock! |

Then again, the amount might not have been worth the fight... What a crock!Yeah, it was a big debate. My gym is actually a nonprofit and only open to residents of my town. A letter went out to all the residents (maybe just members) explaining the situation. I guess now they just include the tax in the cost of the membership, because I haven't seen anything about the tax since then. |

Because it sounds like they reached back and charged for months when the tax wasn't actually in force. Now that I think about it, it's not really greedy, just poor execution of the new law. Unless it was ex post facto, in which case; meh. |

But it looks like her gym got a letter from the NJ revenue service telling them to collect and remit the tax on the acrural method. At least that is how I read it.
