Total Time = 2h 33m 10s
Overall Rank = 17/226
Age Group = M3034
Age Group Rank = 4/23
Pre-race routine:

Not used to late starts so it was a bit weird, got to the pool, and hung out for a bit.
Event warmup:

None, we weren't allowed into the pool beforehand. Should have gone for a jog before to loosen the legs.
Swim
  • 23m 6s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim, right about what I expected, I still hate pool swims as people really don't know how to pace themselves. I seeded myself pretty much perfectly, however the guys behind me decided to go flat out for the first 1000 meters so 3 guys passed me, but I ended up passing them all easily in the last 500 meters as they were struggling.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I had a good swim, no complaints.
Transition 1
  • 10m 36s
Comments:

I knew I was going to have a slow T1, looking back at the race results I could have won my age group if I had been smarter and gone faster here, but I wasn't about to freeze my butt off and be cold all day, so I threww on tights, a thermal shirt, jacket gloves, anything available to keep warm. Oh well. I couldn't believe some people were out there in just trisuits!!! Crazy Crazy.
What would you do differently?:

Plan it out better, realistically I could have gone way faster here even while layering up.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 5s
  • 40 kms
  • 33.76 km/hr
Comments:

Plan was to ride hard, and ride hard I did, I felt really strong on the ride, which is good as I have no hard efforts on the bike tyhis year at all. Very happy with this time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I rode exactly as I had planned.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Fast T-2, my bike rack was right near the entrance and exit to transition so that was easy enough.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 47m 25s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 44s  min/km
Comments:

A little slower than I thought I would go(Iwas hoping to go around 45 mins) But with the cold I couldn't feel my feet for the first 5 kms which was a bit awkward!!! Looks like most peoples run times were a little slower than usual, I think everyone struggled with the numb feet thing!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not much, nutrition was good, I felt good, just couldn't feel my feet!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Jumped in a hot shower as soon as possible!!! Luckily we were staying very close to the race course. Good times.

Nice, really solid times out there! That's great that the race went pretty much as you planned - not too often that can happen! Hope this is a great start to an even better season for you!

Great splits!

Especially that swim and bike!  I've heard the run was quite the monster this year due to the exact problem you had, so awesome job!

Great job, Mike! I don't blame you for bundling up.. I think I would have done the same, even if it meant letting others pass. Good to know you've got your A-game already on, and it's just the start of the season!

Congrats on a great race.  Agree about the tri-suits people that was crazy, so cold out there especially on the bike!  Nice RR.
