Subject: The mark of a true champion...

Hi eveyone,

I wanted to share something with all of you that I was REALLY encouraged and impressed by today.

I did my 1st 10K this morning.  While there, I had the opportunity to see what being a real champion is all about.

The overall winner for all women this morning was Heather Fuhr.  As you may know she has won many triathlon events, including the Hawaii Ironman in 1997.

When the very last person to finish the race was coming down the stretch, there was Heather running with her and encouraging her. Immediately afterward, she quietly slipped over the water table and brought the women some water.  It was obvious that the woman was a stranger to Heather, and it was a simple act of graciousness and kindness.  This was all done very quietly, without drawing any attention to herself.

I must tell you that that today I saw what a real champion looks like.

Dan

How right you are...it's these little things that mark the difference between a champion and a (true) Champion. Heather is a fine person and I would feel honoured to be in any race that she is involved with.

Indeed, a *TRUE* champion! I am truly inspired by these acts of selfless generosity. The sporting community for triathletes and similar is truly inspiring to me. I have said many times here before, but this community inspires me daily to make myself a better person.

Jawalv, I sure hope that you are right. Of course if I base myself on the people of this forum, then triathletes are truly a special breed. I have been involved in all three sports for many years and found swimmers to be elitist and cold, cyclists are snobbish and close-knit, but runners are warm and friendly and love to share knowledge.

My limited experience is that the last (about the runners) is true of triathletes -- at least in the Sprints I have done. I don't know about the longer tris and more competitive levels.
