Subject: Quein es mas macho?
A couple years ago someone gave me a KHS Competition road bike. I also have a Raleigh M80 mountain bike. The KHS is much older--meaning no newer supercool components, except a cushy seat--and heavier than the Raleigh, but it is a road bike. I could buy new tires for the M80 and use it, but is it worth the hassle to save a few pounds (measured by lifting both bikes and saying, "whoa, that ones heavier") when it really isn't designed for road use? Opinions please.

In a triathlon, the lightness of the bike does not matter as much as the aerodynamic properties of said bike. The KHS, no matter how old is probably still more aero than the mtn bike. What components does the KHS have?

Suntour shifters/deraileurs and DiaCompe brakes.

And yes, it is more aerodynamic.

UPDATE: From what I can find on the internet, it looks like they are from the early 80's.

Well, there you have it; the KHS would be the better bike for a tri. Just make sure that all the moving parts are in working order. If you have a mind to, you can aero bars to it, shift the seat forward a few centimeters, and voilà, le tri-bike. Oh, and I would suggest replacing the "cushy" saddle with a racing saddle; it is much more comfy in the long run.

Even if the road bike is old, it will be better geared for road riding. Mtn bikes are geared to go up hills, while road bikes have more gears to go fast. I would go with the road bike.
