Age Group Rank = 12/39
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6, ate my usual 1/2 bagel with peanut butter, 1/2 a bannana and large coffee, which was great because I had skipped my caffeine for 3 days before the race. I had packed all my gear the night before so it was off to the race, arriving about 7AM to a light rain. Set up my gear in the transition area, took my helmet over to where the pool exit was and set it on the ground, all by itself, which would prove to not be a good move later.
Event warmup:

Swam a nice warmup, 350 yards, and then waited for my swim start,8:55:30.
Warmed up again in the diving well about 10 minutes before my start.
Swim
  • 4h 20m 21s
  • 300 yards
  • 1h 26m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a good swim, I had put down 4:34 for my estimated swim time, so I was very happy with a 4:20, felt great coming out.
What would you do differently?:

I could have pushed harder on the swim but it was a great way to start the race.
Transition 1
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Back to the helmet outside the pool fiasco, I guess I should have known something was wrong when there was no other gear next to mine, I had my little marking flag next to my helmet and it was there but NO HELMET! After running around looking for it, I thought it may have washed away there was so much water. Plan B, run to the car, grab my extra helmet, run into a friend of mine who was done, he gave me his helmet. Ran to my bike and there it was, my helmet, sitting on the ground next to my bike. I know I left it by the pool so someone picked it up and took it to my bike,
What would you do differently?:

I will leave my helmet at my bike, the 10 seconds I might save was not worth the panic.
Bike
  • 32m 36s
  • 20 kms
  • 36.81 km/hr
Comments:

All things considered I was happy with the bike, on the second lap I calmed down and saw that my day was not ruined, I could still beat my last years time. Maybe the secret is to ride angry!
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Went past my rack, had a hard time getting my running shoes on, which were underwater.
What would you do differently?:

I should have thought about where the rack was while coming in off the bike, I forgot about it untill I was running into the transition area, mental mistake.
Run
  • 22m 9s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 26s  min/km
Comments:

Felt good on the run, no mile markers to go by but saw that I could come close to my goal
Post race
Warm down:

Warm down was a big hug from my soggy wife who cheered me on for the whole race in the pouring rain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain, loosing my helmet.

Event comments:

I was happy, my goal was 1:02, actual time was 1:03:36, 3 minutes better than last year. Awards cruise was great.

Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: Very interesting. It was raining so hard and the wind so strong it felt like it was hailing at times, my glasses got lost in the helmet move so at times I either looked straight down or had to close my eyes for a second. There was lots of standing water on the roads so my plan was to take it easy, did not want to wreck, but I was so mad that I was going as hard as I could. After the first lap I felt great, there was a nice long stretch of road with a tailwind so it make up for the sections that were windy.

I went at about 10:40 so the weather cleared. I watched you guys in the pouring rain while I set up in the second transition area. I'm thoroughly impressed that you improved your time despite the weather

Congratulations!!!!!
