Age Group = 30-35
Age Group Rank = 22/43
Pre-race routine:

Flew into Hawaii on Wednesday. Had to take the bike into the shop had some shifting issues caused by the flight from Boston I’m sure. Mostly just relaxed but did go for a couple of swims and bike rides on the course during the remainder of the week. The winds were outrageous all during the week out on the roads. Sunday woke up at 4:30am. Had 1/2 bagel with PB and a banana. Got dressed and packed up the bikes. Stomach did not feel to good, most likely nerves. Left for the race at 6am and started to setup spot. Went to get my numbers and put some suntan lotion on. Headed down to the water around 7am and warmed up a little.
Event warmup:

Swam about 100 yards
Swim
  • 33m 1s
  • 1663 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

The start was staggered Pro’s and relays at 7:30, men at 7:35 and the women next. Was feeling pretty good most of the way did get slapped a little but nothing crazy. Starting in the back helped a little although I did get lapped and swam over by some of the guys and girls in the first wave and most likely some of the women that started after me. That was fine for the first tri I will get better at this. Swam all the way to the beach but getting up out of the water I was a little out of it. Was pretty happy with my time once I figured out I was done with the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing just need to get faster
Transition 1
  • 05m 18s
Comments:

I was a little out of it here. We had about a 250 yard run to the T area. It took a little bit of time to get my legs under me. I had a hard time getting my shirt on. Had issues getting socks and shoes on. Might want to try and use the towel I laid out next time. Over all I felt out of control. Also forgot to drink Carbo pro and water. Once I did get my stuff together ran out of T1 but had a hard time getting clipped in.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice practice and get new shoes. Also need to relax
Bike
  • 1h 23m 29s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 17.82 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike went pretty well. Got to pass a lot of the people who kicked my but in the swim. I was amazed by the people on Mountain bikes a lot of them were kicking it, staying up with the road bikes. I could have gone a little bit faster but was a little scared the headwinds were going to pick up at the end of the course as they did earlier in the week and wanted something left for them. They never did. I also did not want to burn out on the run. Again this being the first one was not sure what I had in me.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water and ride at a higher cadence
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

I was a little bit better on this one. Was slow getting off the bike and running in my bike shoes. Need to work on this.
What would you do differently?:

Practice Practice.
Run
  • 55m 50s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

It took me about 1.5 miles to feel comfortable out there. Most of this was on the road once my leg came back I felt great. I passed a lot of people. Because of the trail/coral/lava running had to walk and significantly slow down in a couple places out of fear of breaking something like my legs. I think I could have run sub 9s but what are you going to do. It was still a lot of fun.
What would you do differently?:

I did not do any brick training prior to this event will be doing a lot of them in the next two months in prep for Honu.
Post race
Warm down:

Beers and hamburgers

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First my swim. But mostly the run course. There is not a lot of Corel, and lava in Boston to practice running on.

Event comments:

I had a blast. My goal for this first tri was to finish and if I felt good to beat 3 hours. Well I did both. The post race event was great. Great band and tons of Kona Brewing Co. beer.

Congratulations on your 1st tri! Under 3 hours is great, and this is acually what I`m shooting for in my 1st olympic tri (I still have over 3 months to prepare). I`m sure that once you lock down the transitions and do some bricks, this time will drop even more.

Awsome race!

Great job to you too. You're doing Honu next? I wish I could get over to the islands again.

Scott, awesome job man! Under 3, in your first was big!......The adrenalin got the best of you on the transfer from swim to bike....You need to shoot for the big one, after Honu.

PS - Kona Brew is great, but i'm sure it was 10x as good after....keep it up
