Subject: Out of true carbon wheels?

A 1600$ Mavic Carbone Ultimate wheel became out of true during shipping. The wheel has never been used and is perfect otherwise but has become 2-3mm out of true. Is this too out of true to be a good race wheel?  Is there a price where it would be worth it?

Why don't you take it to your LBS and have them true it? It's probably a $10 job.

The wheel is untrueable, full carbon with bladed carbon spokes.

I'd send it back, and get a different wheel that you can true. I'm not sure i get the rationale behind manufacturing untruable spoked wheels...

I have the same problem with a Hed ALPS rear wheel. I bought the wheel new from Ebay and when I went to put it on I noticed that it is was roughly 1/16 out of true in a few places. The LBS told me that it is untruealbe, but when I called HED they told me to send it to them and they will see what they can do. They couldn't promise anything though.....

I will be packing it up this week and sending it off.

Thats the thing, it can't be sent back because the warranty is void. It was the retailers fault that it wasn't cared for properly. They are supposed to be bomb proof and not ever come out of true but some idiot stacked tons of empty boxes on it and now its out a little. Just trying to see if it is worth any money at all. I have never ridden a rim out of true that fast so I would it wobble at high speeds?

It can't be sent back to Mavic or to the retailer? Because I'd already have it back in the box to the retailer.

The guy at HED told me that a wheel out of true will not cause any issues with speed or breaking. He said the only issue is that it may be noticeable to the rider behind you. I'm sure it all depends on how out of true we are talking about, but in my case, he told me the wheel will operate as it should. Now, the resale on the wheel could be a lot less as you would have to describe the problem.

If HED can't fix my issues, I will just use the wheel as a training wheel until it's dead.

They also told me that they could remove the aluminum braking surface and remold a new one on. He thinks it would work but it will cost me some money.

Yeah it can't go back to either. It is just sitting there and they are deciding what to do with it. I was just seeing if it would be worth it to offer a little money for it. (my friend told me about it).  That would be a killer wheel for 500$ or so but I dont know if I would be spending my money better by getting a true cheaper set.
