Overall Rank = 49/271
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 5/20
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45 and threw my stuff in the car. Had an almost two hour drive to get to the race site. Ate a piece of bread and a banana on the way there. Drank a mixture of HEED and Perp.
Event warmup:

Jogged for abotu five minutes. Two bathroom breaks (three if you include one in the lake!) Swam a few minutes to get used to the wetsuit.
Swim
  • 13m 58s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Horrible swim. I don't really know what happened. The water was choppy but I didn't expect it to be that bad after my warm up. It was also my first swim with my new wetsuit. I felt tired by the first turn buoy which was only 250 yards into the swim. Not good. I started getting passed at about this point. Usually my arms get tired long before my legs during the swim but not the case. My legs just felt awful.
What would you do differently?:

Go without the wetsuit maybe? No clue.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Good T1 considering I had to strip off the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 44m 30s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I'll start be saying that this was a great bike ride for me.

NOW...its obvious that I need to work harder on the riding. This was probably my best ride to date and I got slaughtered. There I was "flying" for me...getting passed like crazy. Its clear that my race pace for sprints has to be around 23mph.

Anyway, I started a bit slow because my legs still felt fried from the swim. After about two miles I was good to go. After the 10 mile mark I got into a "group" so to speak. Six miles of cat and mouse to finish the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Frick. Bike more, bike harder...I guess.

Weird feeling. On one hand I feel like I had a great ride. On the other hand I can't help but feel like I got smoked.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

A bit too slow. Again opted to put on socks.
What would you do differently?:

Suck it up and deal with the blisters.
Run
  • 20m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run as usual. I'm a runner. Passed a good amount of people. My last mile must have been my fastest.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start out a bit faster...hard to do though.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged a mile with Kelly. Drank a coke and had a yummy burrito.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not really focusing on sprint tri's right now, so perhaps next year I can put more effort into the short fast races.

Event comments:

Decent race. I'll probably be back next year, but only because its close to home.

Well, when you swim fast, you have to bike fast not to get passed!  If you want to pass lots of people on the bike, try doing it my way -- take 18 minutes to finish the swim.  Wink

Nice race!

great job!! It is good that you could identify your weakness. I think you should swim a couple of time in your wet suit just get the the feel. I had the same thing happen to me when I swam for the first time with a wet suit. I felt like my breathing was a little out of whack and also moving was a little but harder while swimming.

Overall AWESOME!!! Can't wait to hear more stuff!

Now remember to relax and take it easy for a couple of days.
