A little about myself. IM 34 year old Captain for the state of Wisconsin Dept of Corrections. I started my career 13 years ago at a husky 162lbs on my 6'2 frame.

I got into weight lifting and add alot of mass. Then work and lifes stress began to take its toll. Last year I was up to 309 and said that was enough.

I took up some home workouts and dropped some lbs. I started watching my diets etc and the weight is coming off nice and slow like its supposed to - even though I wish it came off faster.

So this year I decided enough to bouncing around my living room 6 days a week to a video tape. I saw an add for a 150 mile cycling event in July for cancer. I thought this is a great way to lose some weight, get outside, save the joints and do something for someone other than myself. So Im entered into that. Bought a Hybrid Trek and began logging miles. By my 10 ride ever in many many years Im up to 65 n 5 hours riding time.

Then when I was telling someone my  on this bike they suggested I try a Tri....I laughed and said I cant run, nor can I swim, and I can barely ride a bike - so Why not?

Im vacationing out of town right now, so no bike. I just went for my first run in a long time.

Im going to be needing some Tri specific clothing. Which should be interesting. I wear an XL Trek short. But have a 48 inch chest and a tad over 18 inch arms. I still go 265.  IF anyone has some gear that no longer fits them and wants to sell it, let me know. Im going to be doing the first few Tri's on my hybrid bike. I hope to get a road bike this summer later on, when the belly disappears.

I got pointed to this site from one of my biking sites and am enjoying reading all I can! Thanks in advance.

Im located in Mauston, Wisconsin - just north of Wisconsin Dells. If anyone is in the area I would like to meet up and discuss some things. I really dont have much of a clue.

Good luck..great plan you have!

We used to live in Chicago and would drive thru Mauston on our way to MN! Nice hills to ride there.

Many of us came from backgrounds similar to yours out of shape and overweight. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish once you set your mind to it.

I can't help you on the clothes or the live nearby parts.  But I can say welcome to the site, and I hope you have continued success with the weight loss.

Hey Good Luck in your search for TRi Clothing. Im like you a brand new guy here and also a bodybuilder looking for a new challenge. I am 5'10" 240lbs. My chest is about 52" or so and my waist is 36". I have to get pants a couple of sizes larger though to fir my legs. Im wondering if they make the pants and shirts like that. I always have to buy2x or 3x for my shoulders also. I am actaully using the Tri Training for my cardio and want to lean out some and drop my bf and settle in my weight about 220 and then I will be in single digit BF.

Check out some of the tri specific websites too. I got an LG shark power suit for half off because it was a 2008 model. I am 6'4" 270lbs and I fi the large. I found a few other things that where also good deals that way.  Best of luck on your tri!

Well I really dont run very well at all. I went for a short run on friday and today. I feel fine cardio wise but the muscles need to adapt to the running motion compared to the bike and the weight and pounding that ensues.

I hope to run 2-3 days a week, and think I should progress fairly fast at first. - Hope to anyways.

Im out of town visiting family so my body isnt adapted to this heat yet either. Heat was on at home when I left, now its in the upper 90s.

I'm about right in line with you at 6'2", 265 down from 294. 48-50 on the chest and arms in line with you...my waist is a 40-42 depending on short.   Pearl Izumi makes great stuff that typically fits larger guys.  These are the tri shorts I got:  http://www.pearlizumi.com/product.php?mode=view&pc_id=58&product_id=1372971  they've got a thinner bike pad so you don't get water logged and a couple of small pockets on the bottom of each leg so you can stick a gell or snack in there.  If you need a wet suit, I sugget Quintana Roo...they fit larger guys the best from what I found....other than that I usually just wear UnderArmour base layers and a moisture wicking top over that.

I didn't read most of the replies but I can offer some advice. I have been doing Tris for about 2 years and I'm a bigger fella' also. I'm about 6' 1" (on an internet chat room) and weigh about 212. I taped myself today to get an accurate body fat and I am about 12%. I sport some speedo swim slicks under a 2XU full tri suit. I think the size is a 9 and it fits really well, (no rubbing on certain body parts during the bike). The suit has a gel pouch in the small of the back and it feels great on the skin with great breathability. When/if you choose a tri/tt bike to ride. Make sure your bike has plenty of spokes and a nice stiff front fork to support your weight. Good luck on training and stay safe behind the bars. Semper Fi.

Wow you guys dug this up from a bit.

I havent been able to do much working out lately. I have been working a ton. When I leave tonight (yeah still at work) I will have 76 hours in. I did manage to get 2 softball games in Wednesday night though.

I was able to run some a week ago, ran pretty good and far for me. Right now I gotta focus on this 150 mile charity bike ride Im doing for a fellow co-worker.

Well got up this morning and since I dont kn ow how to eat properly for endurance I once again didnt. I had bread with peanut butter. Then when I hit mile 35 I hit the wall so hard I almost couldnt get my legs to move.

I was clipped by a car today and ran off the road. I couldnt get the plate as they quickly turned.

Noticed a slight improvement with the road tires. Im not sure how much exactly as the last 5 miles killed my avg speed.

40.08 miles
13.08 avg (remember on a hybrid)
avg cadence of 75 - seriously I was trying to get this higher. This is going to take some work, maybe a bike fit will help this. Maybe a hybrid limits the ability to spin real fast?

OK forget my Avg cadence. My cheaper Sigma computer skews the results. It avgs it over the entire time, not just when pedalling so its all jacked up.

I generally dont watch my cadence when I ride. I got a little disappointed early when I began and turned it to mileage. But today I turned it back on. I was in the upper 80s and lower 90s most of the time. Some times over 100 even in my big ring (triple)

I really wanted a short ride today to see how I responded to the 40 miles yesterday. Physically I felt fine, but I have a head ache and I kinda lost focus real early.

But I really wanted to stay in my big ring. I rarely am in it, heck I could say never. But today I focused on staying it and pushing. Big improvement in speed. I gotta find some math people to figure out if its better to be in the big gear and be in lower gear on the cassette or middle ring and higher gear in the cassette.

But I cant argue with results.

12 miles at 14.19 avg. I feel great physically...... felt good. I actually feel like going for a run. That is just plain freaky wrong.

Well with work, and rain all week. Today was first time out since sunday. I pushed it to 51.43 miles.

Once again I screwed up the eating. I tried to bring stuff, it got all melted and gross so pushed through the bonkness.

Avg MPH was pretty low today, legs felt heavy from the get go. Got into the wind first thing then just pushed through it. By the time I got it at my back I was getting pretty slow and weak. Trying to get the proper nutrients in now.

Took a nice easy ride this morning. Was more to get out and do something than get any real meaningful training in. Pedaled nice and easy and just saw the sights and the critters so early in the AM.

Was nice to get out early and get some blood moving.

thanks for the kind words in my race report, I just came across your thread here. Looks like you are progressing and sticking to it!  great job keep it up.  I rock a hybrid as well, also opted for road tires on it, and I also have an old mtb bar tha is like a bull horn bar for extra hand postions, it helps alot.
Make sure your staying hydrated as well, the headaches and loss of focus for me usually mean I am not hydrated enough.
I am right next door in Minnesota, I went to college in Lacrosse so was through the Mauston area a lot on our adventures, I think its exit 69 if I am not mistaken (thats pretty funny when your in college).  I'll be checking in on your logs to see how you are doing.
Whens the 150 ride?  and then when is the first tri!!!?
