Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5, had coffee. Kevin (kelmore) picked me up at 6ish and we arrived at the site around 6:20. Walked our bikes up to transition got checked in.
Event warmup:

After getting the transition set-up we headed out for a short run around the backside of the lake and stretch. probably a mile or a little less. walked over to the swim start at the beach and got into the water about 10 mins before start. Swam to first buoy and back to get used to the water.

  • 800 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters

Came out of the gates ripping, made it to the first buoy ridiculously fast, then it all caught up with me. Started to get the restricted in the wetsuit feeling and it all went to hell. Rolled onto my side to catch my breath for a sec, got going again but only made it maybe 50m. rolled onto the side again, breathing very hard, take in a mouthful of Windsor Town Lake and gag. Relax and take some deep breaths, start to swim again, and feel great for the last 400m.
What would you do differently?:

Wishful thinking on my part with the sprint start. Once I caught my breath and got it back together I was ok.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s

The swim exit is a little hairy, and then the transition was a really long and skinny so we had to run all the way to the end with bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I was exhausted from the swim start and still getting my head back together.
  • 27m 30s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.82 mile/hr

Was pretty happy with my bike. I was hoping to see 22mph average, but I am satisfied, especially after the tough swim start I had. No major ordeals to talk about other than hard riding maintaining a decent cadence. I had a couple miles worth of cat and mouse with a woman in a blue jersey. Other than that it was a decent ride, hopefully I can improve on this throughout the year.
What would you do differently?:

I don't train a lot for speed on the bike but plan to start training harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s

Normal transition
  • 22m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile

Actually this was the best part of my race. I was hoping to go faster, but the gas-job I did to myself in the swim lingered around. I was breathing hard the whole way while holding my pace. As people passed me I tried to latch onto and hold pace for a few strides. This kept my pace and speed up. I didn't really have any expectations because I had not run for 5 or 6 days prior to this race. I had some PF flare up in my foot and (being scared to death of lingering injuries) decided to immediately stop running. I managed to make it through the run without it becoming a factor or rearing its ugly head at me. I can still feel that it is not 100%, but it has stopped bothering me. A few more days off from running and a slow restart should do the trick.
What would you do differently?:

Relax, I felt really tight the whole run and could never fully catch my breath. I am used to having longer runs to find that efficient running zone.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, got a couple bananers, put a shirt on and went to find Kevin. Ran into his wife and son and watched him run by. Went over to the finish and got some food while reminiscing about our awesome swim experiences.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The first 5 minutes of my race

Event comments:

This was a good sprint race to get the season started in NOCO. Just look at my ranks in my age group and you can see all the stiff competition came out for this one. The lunch at the finish was great, along with the coffee and lemonade. The rain held off just long enough for us to get back to our cars.
