I signed up for the Longmont triathlon this weekend.  Anyone else doing it?  It will be my first race.  If anyone has done this race before, can you tell me how the pool swim works?

i'm also doing this one. We'll find out more about the swim at packet pickup. My guess on the swim would be a 3 or 4 person per lane swim. The one thing they pointed out was your start time is only approximate since groups in front of you can finish early.

Good luck with the race.

I called them on Wednesday and they said they hope to have the swim heat info up on the web sometime today (friday).  Since I'm in Denver, I probably won't pick up my packet until I'm at the event.  I think I saw somewhere they will have 5 per lane.

Yes I did go back and read that this morning. 5 people in a lane will be crowded. It will be worse if people are off on their times. I figure with my slow time I will be very early in the race.

5 per lane is pretty typical.  Its really not that bad.

most events with pool swims start with the fast heats first, btw.  Is Longmont different?

Good luck!

I would think fast times would go first.  I put down 13 minutes for my 500 yds estimate, which I may regret as being too slow of an estimate, I did the full 525 in 13 minutes on Wednesday and I suspect with the adrenaline of it being a race I'll be a fair amount faster.

They've posted the heats & starting times.  Slow goes first.  I guess they want to see some passing  during the bike & run.  Here's the link: http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/rec/special/documents/HeatList2009.pdf

I've converted it to a spreadsheet, drop me a pm if you want a copy.  It looks like they were able to keep it to groups of four and in some cases three.

I'm still curious how the timing works.  Do you get to dive in and the start timing mat is at that end and the end timing mat is at the other where you get out? This would make some sense given a 525 yd swim, you finish at the opposite end from where you start.  Is it one at a time in your heat group or is a free-for-all with four of us jumping in at once? Given the shirt sizes of the people I'm with, S, S, S, and my XXL, I would undoubtedly win that battle ;-)

Fall Frenzy notably.  If you're fast, you're looking at starting more around lunch time.  Not the best run swim but the rest of their tri is great!
