So...since my first tri is this Sunday (Hawk Island), I'm starting to get curious how I might do...

I got up this morning and headed out to Kensington to do a quick bike time trial before work. I started by the East Boat Launch (near Grand River/Kent Lake Rd)...went around the park to Kensington Road...and back to the East Boat Lauch. It as like 13-14 miles...and I averaged 18.5mph. Is that good or bad for that ride? Afterwards, I definitely had enough in the tank for a 3 mile run...but I only had enough time for a 1 mile run at 7:00 minute mile pace. I couldn't keep up that run pace for all three miles though...I usually settle into a 8 or 9 minute mile pace.

Thanks!

Thats not slow at all.  I would say that would put you solidly in the middle of the pack but you should check last years race results too.  You have nothing to worry about come Sunday.

It's so hard to gauge how my time at Kensington translates to Hawk Island. I read the Hawk Island bike course is pretty much flat...while the ride I do at Kensington is so hilly...I hit nearly 40mph on one of the down hills...and my poor weakling body slows down to like 8mph going up some of the other hills! lol

I know what you are saying, its hilly where I ride too but I think when you factor in the uphills/downhills over 10+ miles your overall time on a hilly course won't be that much different than on a flat one.  If you are worried about Sunday don't be.  I can tell you already you are faster than I am, I'm not running a 7 minute first mile unless there is a bear chasing me.

Thanks! I think I'm feeling less nervous...but only a LITTLE less nervous...

I totally fell on my butt when I first got the Kensington this morning. I was trying to figure out how people do a fast T1 by leaving their shoes clipped into their bike. I did not figure it out...suffered a little bit of road rash, bruised ego, and scratched up my brakes! LOL

18.5 is very respectable imho, and I run 8-9 minute miles with or without a triathlon, so I'd say you're in great shape for your first tri.

18.5 at Kensington is great! There are only those few hills, but they are pretty darn steep (for MI!). And, you rode them all twice, in a short span of time, so keeping your avg. at 18.5 is great. I didn't hit 18+ until after my first few races. I think you'll do great at Hawk Island. Have fun!

I think you are going to have to change your name, you are not slow.  I would guess that if you can average 18.5 at kensington, you could do about 20 at HI.  If you are anything like me, being in a race gives an extra push, even compared to a testing TT.

HI is a fast bike course, very fast.  You have all right turns, except for one left.  That is the only place that you have any traffic concerns.  Last year, the lane was swept through out the course, and it was very smooth.  Hopefully, it will be very clean again this year.

OMG you definitely need to change your login name. 18.5 is pretty damn good average IMHO, especially for a training ride and you are doing your FIRST tri coming up.  You're only gonna get better and faster.....

I'm not sure fastpoke has a nice ring to it.  Maybe SpeedyG. ?

Oh, I can almost guarantee I'll live up to my username! I am quite possibly the slowest swimmer the world has ever known...and I really don't know what I'm doing during transition. It always seems to take my long in the couple practice transitions I've done on my own.

And I haven't figured out to mount my bike quickly after the swim. I fell on my butt today at Kensington trying to mount my bike like the pro's! lol

I haven't figured out the keep your shoes clipped thing yet either, I'll be running in them out of T1, will probably run barefoot back to T2

I am far from an expert but I would strongly discourage trying to mount/dismount while leaving your shoes on the pedals unless you have a ton of experience.  It won't save you that much time and there is a big potential for something bad to happen.  I think you will find that the vast majority of people clip and unclip their shoes from the bike in T1 and T2.
