Sunny
Total Time = 8h 10m
Overall Rank = 255/410
Age Group = Clydesdales
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

None established yet. This was my first event.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 5:30. Ate small bowl of oatmeal w/ 1 scoop protein powder.
8:00 - Had a PowerGel and stretched.
9:34 - Started swim leg
Swim
  • 05m 29s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Again, I was entered as a Clydesdale, not in an age group. 30 total Clydesdales in this race. I finished 21 of 30 for the race. 12th of 30 for this leg.
What would you do differently?:

Enter myself in the appropriate time group.
Transition 1
  • 03m 55s
Comments:

I was pretty gassed already at T1 from the extra effort in the pool, so I took some extra time getting ready for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Just move faster.
Bike
  • 43m 48s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 16.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Had this been a normal day without the wind, I would've felt better, but I'm 6'3" and 205, I think the wind ate me up. Need to practice riding in a more aerodynamic position, couldn't get low enough.
What would you do differently?:

I would train much more, and practice my transitions. Practice in a lower position on the drops.
Transition 2
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

Got off the bike and felt like I was walking on jelly. I trained a bike-run before, but I must have worked harder on the bike leg. I could not run to the transition area. I really took my time trying to loosen up. Drank a CytoMax 6oz drink.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Run
  • 29m 7s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Need to put in more miles on the asphalt. This was a good learning experience to see how my body responded to biking at a high intensity, then immediately running.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Take less time in T2. Between T1 and T2, I added probably 4-5 minutes to my overall time. As I get better at those, my times should improve.
Post race
Warm down:

None really. Stretched a bit when I was packing up after the race. Drank 6 more oz of CytoMax.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Conditioning.

Event comments:

Really impressed with the way this race was presented and organized. Other than the swims starting 10-12 minutes behind, it was an awesome experience. I will do this again next year!

I entered 3 months ago, before I knew how fast I could swim the 300. I was entered in the 6 minute group, and I've been training the 300 in 4:40. So I had to pass 4 people to get to clear water. This was tough to do, had to really sprint to get by everyone. Last 100 was okay, just tired from having to work so hard to get by the slower swimmers. The 2nd guy did his best to not let me pass.

Felt good to start, other than it being 43 degrees when I got on my bike.
Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: Rolling hills throughout. Combined with the headwind, I struggled. Plus a killer hill just when you think you're getting close to the finish. It came right after a good downhill. I really dug in and gave it all I had on the downhill; passed a couple riders, then around a curve and...there it was. It crushed me. Passed about 5, got passed by about 8.

Coming out of T2, I was worried about running the 3.1 mile leg. It took me until after the first mile to feel like I was normal again. Legs finally loosened up a bit.
Course: Rolling hills with a long climb to finish the race. This, again killed me. The last 1/2 mile or so was uphill.
