Hello out there!  Thought I would get this started.  Did Tune-Up Tri last week, this is the next Tri on my schedule.  Any veterans have some advice?  My experience with this race is that the course is a LOT faster than the tune-up course.

I'm considering this race, never done it before but I ride that bike route all the time. Looking at their new bike route it could be interesting. Good size hill up Monarch that will hurt some people but coming back down I usually hit 40-45 mph and in a pack of riders that gets scary. Hopefully people would be spread out at that point.

Wow!  I didn't even realize they changed the course until you mentioned it.  Is this pretty much a straight shot down Monarch to Daniels Park Rd?  I wouldn't worry too much about riding in a pack.  I've done 5 of the HRRS Tri's now, and it seems like I'm pretty much on my own during the bike.  Everyones ability is so different that you'll rarely find yourself riding with others.  With the exception of coming out of T1, the roads are pretty wide open.

I use Eastridge alot and started doing this run for training, its a little hilly on the back half but not too bad.  Climbing Monarch is sure to resolve any bike pack issues that might remain, but any bunching would likely thin out on MacArthur Ranch Blvd anyway.

Swim times should be faster b/c the run from pool to T1 mat/parking lots is shorter.

I'm in Boulder Peak so not doing this one, but may volunteer.  Already registered for Splash-Mash-Dash in August

Be careful on the Monarch downhill, the shoulders can be a bit sandy and it's too easy to hit 45-50...hopefully they will sweep it before the race!

Giddy up! 50 mph.... My land speed record is 51.3 and I wasn't on my tri bike.

What kind of cassette would you recomend? I've got a 11x23 and 12x27.

Well, OK you don't have to go that fast...but it's easy to, esp. if you like to push the big ring downhill...just saying that I live in that part of HR, and  these roads are in my backyard.  It's not like the entire shoulder is sandy, but there are spots where it accumulates.  From my (limited) experience with the HR Tri Series the RDs do get the streets/shoulders swept before their events, which should help a lot.  Also there's a decent-sized striped shoulder lane on Monarch.

That said, Monarch is a county road, and has historically been outside of the HR maintenance boundaries (that could be changing with the addition/formal dedication of the BackCountry & Conservation openspace areas on either side of the road).  I think it's a great hill for training climbs/rides, especially if you're in the event.  Traffic should be pretty light on race morning, too.

Like riding anywhere , don't exceed your comfort zone, keep your head up and be aware of the conditions...

Oh, no one said there'd be math on the quiz   Besides, I ride a triple.

I've pushed 45 on the west side of Wildcat Reserve (from the Tune Up) and Monarch has a couple of slightly steeper sections, IMO. When I hit that mark coming down Monarch the 1st time, with plenty of hill in front of me I did a gut check.  Also there is a saddle in the middle of the descent, so its not just one big blazing downhill.  Fun if you like that kind of thing though...

Sounds fun - I'll check out the course before hand so that I see if I can test the land speed record.

I used to have a triple but traded it away now I play the cassette swapping game.

I've road this many times as well and the return trip in can be very fast, especially if the wind is blowing from the south.  I've hit 50 mph on the first long downhill and managed to maintain 20 miles an hour through the uphill just from momentum.  Then the next long downhill is probably even faster.  The 35 mph speed limit will be difficult to hold, especially in a race setting.  The key is to get as much speed as possible on the first long downhill so you can cruise up the hill then crest for the next long downhill.
Unfortunately I have to work on Wednesday or I'd tag along on the ride...

Okay, sorry for the late notice, but we've got a training ride planned tomorrow.  11:30 @ Eastridge.  Molly and I are confirmed, if you are interested just show up.

As a side note, did anyone race @ Aquaman tonight?  Those waves were brutal, and the sun was blinding! I really liked the run course though.
