Pre-race routine:

woke up at 4:00, couldnt sleep anymore. layed in bed till 5:00. ate i egg and some Kashi oatmeal and s spaecial K bar. got to the race site at 6:30 as planned, picked out a transition area, chatted with a friend i see at the pool. i was not very nervous at all. i didnt even really think about what i had to do that morning after i actually arrived on site. just knew i was going to finish.
Event warmup:

no warmup.
  • 25m 44s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 56s / 100 yards

wow. i might as well ahve not even swam twice a week, every week, for the last 6 months. a big difference from pool swimming to open water. i think the excitement and adrenaline got to me and caused me to hyperventilate. i couldnt exhale enough, or inhale enough because my chest was so tight and my breathing was so shallow. just horrible. couldnt take more than 5 strokes freestyle till i'd run out of breath and have to change to front crawl, sidestroke, or on my back. i even did open water swimming 3 times for practice to get over that skiddishness. i wasnt sure how i'd even finish the race after being so worn out trying to tread water for 25 minutes!
What would you do differently?:

ummmm yeah, i think i need to overcome the anxiety of open water. hopefully the anxiety of a race start will be behind me, just figure out how to breath in open water. get more open water experience.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s

went pretty good i think for my first time. like i planned in my mind and trained in the fron yard.
  • 1h 01m 10s
  • 18 miles
  • 17.66 mile/hr

bike course was great. i really like the course because of the challenge of the steep hill, the speed of the downhill, and the ability to cruise at a nice speed on the back of the course. saw a few people walking their bikes up the steep part, but i dont use my bike for taking walks! cars were courteous along the course, keeping a good distance.
What would you do differently?:

i will not unstrap out of my shoes again while they are clipped in to the pedals. it was a fiasco for me and cost me time. i will stay clipped in and pedal like a fool right up to the transition mat and then unclip right before transition. cost me too much time, shoes dragging and kicking the bike around and had to coast in to T2. i bet i lost an easy 20 seconds. all in all, i am very pleased with the bike portion.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s

smooth change-up. cant complain. i think i'll get some speed laces to save a few more seconds.
What would you do differently?:

speed laces.
  • 26m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile

nice run. same pace i run in training. very muddy from a week of rain. trashed my nice running sneakers that i have tried hard for the last 3 months to keep clean. oh well, the still work.
saved the last bit of oomf for the last 200 yards or so to pass the guy in front of me which i'd been following the entire run course. practicing a sprint at the end of my runs in training helped me in the race. a small strategy imo.
What would you do differently?:

train some more to get that time down under 8min/mile.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

freaking out in the open water. everything else had gone like i trained for. i was a little surprised at my reaction to the swim.

Event comments:

i needed more to drink on the run. was a little parched towards the end. but i survived!
