I'm in
anyone do this race last year, if so a few questions
1) what's the water like? (rough, clean, any current?)
2) how the bike course, Hilly?
3) how's the run course, Hilly?

Thanks

Yup, Im in too.

Water will be cold.  Conditions vary a lot in the bay, but expect some chop out there.
Bike course is hilly, supposedly.  "Hilly" can be somewhat subjective but Im planning on riding it in the next two weeks or so and Ill report back w/ elevation n stuff.
Not too sure about the run, but be prepared for Bluff Pass Rd.  This hill is no joke.  I think its about a 1/3 mile long, but I swear its at a freakin 45 degree angle.

This will be my first year with the half, but I have done the Sprint and swam and biked most of the half course before so take this for what its worth.

1) Its Lake Michigan so the water conditions are going to vary.  It will most definitely be cold.  Wetsuits are required if water is under 65 degrees. The water will probably be clear as the zebra muscles have really cleaned it up over the last few years.  I don't think there is a current, but waves could be an issue if they are strong enough.  The first part of the swim to the first buoy should be relatively calm until you pass the breakwater/pier.  Then you are in the lake, and depending on the day, you can have swells typically anywhere from 1-4 feet or heavier chop.  They would call the swim off if its dangerous.  As long as the swim is on, it really pays to know how to breathe bilaterally.  By the way, we had a heavy fog last year that made sighting difficult for some.

2) I don't think so but its what you are used to riding.

3) There is a 200 foot climb in 1/2 mile at one point.  Is that a 7.5% grade?

I am in.

My 1st Door County. I was told the water was cold last year and the surface was choppy. My brother in-law did the HIM last year and indicated that other than the big hill (for bike and run) that takes you inland it is flat (again that depends on what you are used to riding/running on). Compared to IMOO I would say it is flat from what I remember of Door County.

I'm in too.  Second year for the half for me!

The water was rougher the longer it took to get in it so that didn't help.  The only really bad hill on the bike is the bluff about 10 miles from the end of the bike.  Bluff Pass sucks bad but so does this hill that everyone forgets about about 6.5 miles into the run.  It is the furthest point from the finish and caught me by surprise even though I have studied the course plan.

I am in for the second year. The swim could be anything. Last year it seemed to be warmer after you got past the  pier.
The bike is pretty flat some hills here and there. I think the wind was more of an issue on the bike. It seemed to be against you on both sides of the bay.
As was stated earlier, the run is pretty flat except for the hills at 6.5 and 9 miles, both are brutal. The last 1/4 to 1/2 mile is down a steep hill.

My better half uses infinite for long stuff; i have no plan as of yet. can i get away with gatorade, gus, salt - basics? That's what i've been doing on longer bikes thus far.

i'm also out the door soon to get new goggles - 2 pairs of aquasperes are leaking - any favorites?

i need to get my quads ready for some hill action - after the madison 1/2 mary i couldn't walk for 2 days.

FWIW - I was camping last week in Door County at the Peninsula State Park and water temps were 71 degrees at the surface.  Did a couple of long OWS and didn't even use the wetsuit. Not sure what the temps are further south at Egg Harbor where the race is held, but it can't be that much different.

Dont worry.  Itll turn over and we'll get cold water, if its not cold already.  Its almost guaranteed.

I rode the bike course yesterday.  Nice scenery, but it does have some crappy roads in the middle road.  The course only has like 1100-1200ft ascent.  Not bad.

Quick transition question for those that have done the half before. Are they more similar to your local sprint, where you have your rack spot and 1 square foot for all your stuff? Or are they more like the m-dot series, with changing tents, etc?

Waveedog - I have not done the HIM in the past at Door County, but we all had the same transition.  I don't remember seeing any changing tents.  Shoot Sean, the RD, an email if you want to talk with him.

I understand they have to have rules - but i just received an email that my packet is 'suspended' unless i get them a USAT # or $10 check overnighted. other races i just show up with either.....coming off being a RD for a little 5k i understand people can be jags. so i'm venting here rather than contacting this Sean. just under a week to go!!! i'm actually excited! this is after months of fear...so i've come a long way. swimming in choppy, cold water has helped.

Lara13 - I see you're signed up for the half.  Best of luck to you.

That's an odd email you got.  I am curious how you registered up for the race?  I signed up through their website and I either had to list my USAT number or pay an additional $10 for the 1-day membership at the time of registration.

Okay, so who is getting excited?!?  I know I am.  I have a need for revenge on this course.  Let's keep our fingers crossed for good weather unlike the weird fog we got last year!

I am stoked the weather is looking great, and my TRI yesterday was cancelled due to T-Storms, so I am ready for a road trip up north for a family TRI event, my sister inlaw, and brother inlaws are all doing it, should be a blast!

Do we have any word from the race as to the water conditions during the sprint this morning?  I am really nervous about the chop and temperature after last year's race.

The water was 67*F (not bad with a wet suit), 2.5 foot waves, wind 25 mph out of the north. You could body surf into the swim chute! The Sprint swim was shortened to about 300 yards, the water was bad, bad, bad.

The wind should switch from the S.W. tonight and only be 8 to 10 mph Sunday, which will help with the rough water. Glad I didn't have to swim today

Me either.  I hear SOR has horrible water temps.   At least 67 isn't too bad.  But those waves would have been incredible.  The lifeguards pull anyone out?

I spoke with one of the physicians staffing the medical tent and he said they pulled out something like 22 plus swimmers from the sprint.  That chop hurt just to watch from the shore.  Glad the water calmed down on Sunday for the half.
