Subject: What to expect...Collarbone Surgery
I am now 4+ weeks post surgery from having a plate and screws put in to repair my collarbone fracture. The recovery has been great so far. Little pain and decent movement. I have been pretty good at following orders not to do anything that puts stress or pressure on my left arm/collarbone. I am not to do anything until I see the doc next week. The swelling around the incision is ok. There's some redness and a bit of puffiness, but all in all, it looks good.

I'm hoping that he will give me the OK to start exercising/training when I see him next week. All I have been able to do is walk on the treadmill and outside on the hills around my house.

Guess the question is....what can I expect in terms of my recovery from here on out? I know that swimming will probably be the hardest, since there are some range of motion issues. what about biking and running?

Any thoughts from those who have broken their collarbones and needed surgery to repair it.

Good thing all the road rash has healed...

sorry about your crash and injury.  Almost exactly 2-years ago I broke my clavicle.  The bone didn't heal and I laso found that I had torn my rotator cuff. I had surgery to repair both in January 2008.  Anyway, this is how it went for me.  I had several weeks of physical therapy I believe within 4-weeks of the surgery.  It took a lot of work to get the range of motion back...but it's there!  I started on the spin bike about 4-weeks after surgery.  I was in a sling for 8-weeks.  I started treadmill running when I lost the sling.  I think it was about 12-weeks before I was swimming.  Your recovery will probably be quicker as the rotator cuff is what my orthopedic was concerning about me reinjuring from doing too much too soon.

Good luck with your recovery!
