Subject: Common Foods You've Never Eaten
The grocery thread got me thinking about what a nutbag I am when it comes to food. I have never eaten:

Cottage cheese
Sour cream
A pickle
Mustard
Ketchup
Mayonaise
Dill
V-8 juice or tomato juice (I love tomatoes)

There are many more I'm sure. I can't explain it. I've made excellent guacamole for years apparently. I can only say that first hand for about the past 6 months... when I first tried it.

Dear god man, what do you put on hamburgers and hot dogs?!! You've NEVER had mustard or ketchup or mayo? Not on fries? Not on a deli sandwich? You've never potato salad or coleslaw?

I think I can explain why.....Bill is actually Willy,  a 1 year old boy. The avatar is Willy's father "Bill." Willy has taken over his father's account!!Cool

I'm blown away too? Ketchup is introduced when you 1st discover french fries.

Seriously???

How can you NOT eat them?  SOme of those are so common that they may have already been blended in the food.  Have you ever eaten a chicken salad/tuna salad/egg salad/seafood salad sandwich?  Chances are you've already eaten mayonaise.

Have you ever eaten pasta in white sauce? Sour cream may be one of the ingredients.

Ever had borch or other type of soup?  There may be dill in them.  You know that little spiky green thing that looks like tiny pine needle?  Those are dill.

Do you cooked all your food and never eat out?

Never had any of those. Seriously. Not once.

The sick twist to the story is I cooked professionally for a year in a 4-star restaurant while I was waiting for my current job to come open. I can cook anything (even with dill... ) I just don't eat everything.

My 1 year old (his name isn't Willy BTW) is slightly more adventurous. My daughter is perplexed, and has asked me probably a hundred times "okay Dad... tell me again. WHY exactly do you not like ketchup?"

Can't explain it really... I like salsa though. Does that count

ANd for the record I did say I was a nutbag when it comes to food in the OP. I don't know if I can be helped at this point. Just wondering if I'm the only one...

I don't know if I tried it and didn't like it when I was very young, but for as long as I can remember I've had an aversion to those foods. I've certainly had some incidental contact, but as for actually sitting down and eating something with any of those foods... no.

I thought for a long time it had to do with vinegar and acidic foods. I do like balsalmic vinegar though... the older the better.  And I like plain yogurt on fruit.  I don't have an issue with trying new-to-me/exotic fruits or vegetables. H*ll I've eaten street food in Cairo. But it didn't have ketchup on it...

Nope...definitely NOT the only one.   From your specific list...I've never eaten a pickle, or mustard.  But my own list of common foods that I've never eaten, would be quite large...to say the least.   Here is just a sampling...

Mushrooms
a burrito
brussel sprouts
asparagus
tofu
seafood of any kind

I'm beyond help with most of those, too...especially the seafood & mushrooms...won't touch 'em with a 10-foot pole.

Really? Burritos are tasty and so simple. Do you like tacos? They're the same thing, just a different shape, really

Heh... funny I've eaten all of those things. There's a company in Houston that makes an AWESOME Chipotle Tofu Egg Roll. The only way I've eaten brussel sprouts is over roasted with sea salt an olive oil. I consider burritos a food group.

I didn't figure I was alone. It's diffuclt at work sometimes when one of the hospital units will have a potluck lunch. I get the "oooooh did you try my potato salad?" thing and I end up playing "full".  I can't do it.

I know a person who won't eat spaghetti.  But she eats angel hair and fettuccini.

I never had asparagus untill about 3 weeks ago nor had I ever eaten brussel sprouts (even though my dad had them all the time for himself) untill a few months ago.

I love salad, but can't stand lettuce on a sandwich or in a taco.

COMPLETELY understand the ketchup aversion thing. Pickles too.....Thought beets would make me gag until I grew them last year for my husband. Realized it was pickled beets that made me gag.

I wont eat anything thats been in the sun, at a picnic if its not in the shade I wont eat it. I wont sit at a booth in a restuarant if the sun is shining on the table either.

But I have never eaten a big mac, or a whopper....and I love fast food.

I dunno, I make a pretty darn good (vinegary) chipotle ketchup that you might like.

There are very few common foods that I've never eaten, in part because I like a lot of things and in part because I'm not so picky that I'll absolutely refuse to eat a sandwich, for example, if they messed up my order and put mayo (blech) on it. I'll scrape it off, and there will be a bit left on the bread and such, but that's the way it goes. (That said, I avoid mayo-based potato salad like the plague. I'll make mine with vinaigrette, thankyouverymuch.)

The one thing I can think of that I avoid at all costs is scrambled eggs (and omelettes, and frittatas, that sort of thing). I can't say I've never eaten eggs, because I'm cool with eggs in combination with other ingredients, but scrambled eggs? Unless my parents force fed them to me when I was very small, I've never eaten them. In the interest of politeness, I'll almost always force down a bite or two of food I really really dislike, such as very fishy things like caviar and oyster yogurt (I wish I were joking). I'll even eat the soft-boiled egg thingamabob that Thomas Keller does (and David Kinch sort of lifted). But I draw the line at scrambled eggs and omelettes.

Chipotle does go a long way with me. I'm not sure it goes that far... but I would at least be compelled to try it.

I'd try anything from Thomas Keller just on principle. I can't imagine sitting down at the French Laundry and saying "no thanks" to any part of the (what is it typically a seven-course meal?).

I just stood at my kitchen sink and ate cantaloupe chunks wrapped in hardwood smoked salmon (high quality stuff, not the stuff that's dyed orange). Wow. THAT was awesome.

Usually nine, I think. And I agree, I'll try anything Thomas Keller puts in front of me. Probably finish, too, since the courses are so small. (I think I can assume that he won't serve me scrambled eggs, at least not at the Laundry or Per Se, so I'm safe on that count.)

Geez I think my diet of choice while pregnant was chicken sandwiches slathered (okay maybe drowned) with dill pickles and mustard with a V8 chaser!  mmmmmm

We should start a new thread - the weirdest thing you've eaten.  For me - pig's feet - I was in asia and just pointed to the picture and didn't make the connection - *very* salty fatty eek!  But my hubby was the best - we *thought* they were saying something like "boyness tea" and it wasn't until months later we were watching a documentary about cavedwellers that boil the BIRD'S NESTS to make tea!!!  He started gagging on the spot ha ha

Being an Asian and grew up there, if I don't trump everyone, I would be in the top 3.
