Subject: Saddle Sore... OUCH!!!
Important Stats: male, 33, 150 lbs., doctor appointment scheduled for Friday morning, registered for triathlon on July 4th in Minnesota

I went riding last Wednesday and did 25 miles at an 18mph average.  I felt great.  That was by far my longest ride at that kind of pace.  Returning home was a different story, though.

I developed what I believe is a saddle sore.  (It's a roundish growth between my "cheeks," about an inch from a "vital opening.")  I took time off from riding for just shy of a week and it decreased in size.  I swapped out saddles (upgraded to Adamo Road).  The size of the sore was very small today compared to last week, so I (foolishly) went out for a ride to test the new saddle.  You can guess the result... the growth is back and as painful as ever.

Prior to my doctor appointment on Friday morning, I'll take a break from cycling.  In the mean time, I picked up some Polysporin at Walgreens tonight, and will apply some 3-4 times a day.

What more can I do besides pop it with a sterilized needle?  (That kind of a stuff freaks me out!!!)  What kinds of treatments can I expect from my doctor?  Anything I can do to keep this from happening in the future?

Also, I'm looking into upgrading my bibs.  I've got a good pair of Descent bibs now, but maybe they're wearing out.

Thanks in advance for the help!

-Joel

What ever you do, don't pop it yourself. Even if your the cleanest person on hearth it's not the cleanest region of the body. Not to mention the ouch! factor that can be surprising. Have a doctor do it.

If it does pop because the skin has expended enough, then clean it thoroughly and use bag balm. This stuff does miracle, in fact you should get some and apply it ASAP. You can get it at some drugstores, any vet or farming store.

I don't but I know many people do. Have you thougth about buttering. Maybe it could save your buttSmile

I am sorry to tell you this....pop it with a sterilized needle!!! It will make it vanish. I use the smallest little quilting needle i have (i am a reformed quilter) . Burn it to sterilize it......if the needle is small enough it does NOT hurt......honest. Gently squeeze out the gunk, then put polysporin on it several times a day.

Not what you wanted to hear I know.......but its the way to deal with it!!

I am not sure what the Doc will suggest, but its good to be able to take care of this yourself when it happens. Cause it might happen again.

Good Luck!

I learned sumptin' from you, nurse!  Thx.  However, I am dealing with it in my own way - not shaving that area for about 3 - 4 days and let nature heal thyself.

I have this problem occasionally, just pop it.  I have started using triple antibiotic ointment in this area after riding it seems to have decreased the occurence of sores as well as helping the others heal. The only other thing the doc may do is write for a course of antibiotics.

make sure it's not a peritoneal cyst...some guys are prone to getting abscesses in a region between the cheeks at the base of the tailbone, and the only way for it to heal is to have it professionally cleaned out by your doctor; otherwise you can wind up with a nasty staph infection.

if it's just an infected hair follicle or carbuncle, you can drive the infection inward by squeezing or lancing it; a dab of triple antibiotic ointment and one of those waterproof bandaids that seals out moisture and stays on for days will make it shrink. to prevent them, you can try medicated powder or chamois cream on future bike trips; i find that for me, powder works best with heavily padded shorts, while chamois cream works better with my tri shorts and tri saddle. good luck!

x2 on chamois cream.  I got a very small sore when I first started riding and started using chamois cream and have never had any other issues.  I don't know if I still need to use it since my butt is use to the pressure but I still use it on every ride regardless of length.

Why would you want to drive an infection deeper inside your body??  Boils, folliculitis, abscesses, etc are generally treated with a course of antibiotics, lancing, hot packs (this tends to bring the pus/bacteria to the surface), and then possibly squeezing the abscess to push the gunk out of the newly created hole.  Repeat as necessary, then clean and cover.  The antibiotic used and how it should be drained are decisions usually made by the doctor.  If it's larger than a pimple, hard, or has been around for more than 4 or 5 days then I'd have the doctor see it - a staph infection can kill you if it spreads and the longer you wait the worse it can get.  The tiny ones that have just recently appeared seem to do pretty well with self treatment.

My pleasure!

I knew for many years that it was on the market but since I was only doing short distances (20 to 50 km) I never felt the urge for using it. Now that I'm planing for longer distances I might try it. Your question reminded me of it. I'm thanking you back.

you definitely wouldn't, which is why i was advocating using antibiotic ointment and a bandaid rather than popping it. the less you pick, often the better off you are.

and don't be shy with applying lots of the chamois cream. at the end of a 30-40 mi ride i sometimes start to chafe, so today i used a heaping glob more than usual and i'm totally rash free.
