New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I need to do some longer rides outside of Manhattan, but my internet searches have turned up mostly confusing cue sheets with endless variations that I'm having trouble sorting out. I did a few rides with the NYCC, but don't really like training with a group (another person or two is great.) Any suggestions for where to find good rides, or anyone more experienced than I am looking for an occasional companion for a few long weekend rides at moderate training pace? I'll buy lunch! Thanks, Sarah |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hop on the West Side Highway bike path heading North...you'll end up on Riverside Drive...take it up to the GW Bridge...over the bridge, turn right (Rt 9W) and follow the others. Stop at any point and head home in the opposite direction. Chances are, there will be plenty of others on the road as well. The park is really tough - runners, bladders, kids, tourists, horses, events....I'm done! Edited by jackxter 2009-06-24 1:51 PM |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I totally agree about the park - I only go for morning rides. It's very quiet at 5:15 AM. I know it seems stupid, but I got lost (well, I knew where I was, but couldn't easily figure out how to get onto the bridge)last time between the point where the west side bike path ends (around 96th?) and the bridge. I'll try it again this weekend. I'm sure it's just a matter of doing it once. Thanks! Sarah |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Donno where you are starting from, but I think this map will help you with regards to the best way to the bridge. http://www.mapmyrun.com/ride/united-states/ny/new-york/501124216221... |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I completely agree about getting lost trying to get onto the GWB, I also struggled with the cue sheets on my first attempt. The main thing is to keep on Riverside Drive until just before New York Pres Hospital (it is a pretty good landmark). At that point turn right onto 165th which you will remember the next time as it is the first steep climb of day. Take the first left (Fort Wash Ave) and then you can actually look out for the cycle route signs that will tell you where to turn left. My route is slightly different to the one on the MapMyRun link. I turn left off Fort Wash Avenue onto 177th and then take the second right (Cabrini Blvd) which puts you onto the bike access for the bridge. When returning to Manhattan I ride the wrong way on Cabrini Blvd and then go right and immediately left onto Haven Ave which takes you back to New York Pres and then you can just follow the route you came on. I'm not riding out that way again until 4th July weekend, but if you haven't got the route sorted by then let me know. I'm also not a fan of big group rides but would certainly be interested in doing a few longer rides with a couple of BT'ers if anyone is interested. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in the process of setting up a training center targeted for NYC based triathletes. It is a 3 bedroom unit on a hilltop with Mohonk Mt. views less than 3 miles from NYS Thruway Exit 19 (Kingston / Woodstock), or about 90 minutes by car from NYC. On site is an endless pool, pond, running trails and even the areas top bicycle mechanic. Nearby are incredible roads for cycling as well as an all weather track and rail trail for running. The coaches from Catskill Mt. Multisport will be available for swim stroke work, running stride analysis (utilizing dartfish) and bike fit, as well as to join you on your workouts. A weekend away from NYC can really jump start a new level of fitness and enthusiasm. |

This is very helpful and it's nice to know that someone else has struggled with getting to the bridge. I am starting from midtown west, so will go straight up the westside bike path until RIverside. I will try it this weekend, but would also be interested in meeting up for a ride the weekend of July 4th if you'd like |

![]() If you take the bike path (instead of Riverside Dr.) all the way up, the approach to the bridge is a little different. Stay on the bike path until you ride under the GWB. Continue to follow the path up a steep, windy hill and eventually you come to a pedestrian bridge over the West Side Highway. Cross that bridge and turn right. That will bring you to 181st street. Ride up the hill on 181st street until you get to Ft. Washington and turn right to get to 177th then continue as posted above. All that assumes that the South Side bike path is open, which it normally is. The past couple weeks I've been forced a couple times to the North side path. You access that of of 179th Street, either by riding like you are about to cross the bridge with traffic and hopping onto the bike path, or staying on 179th until you see some stairs heading up to the bridge. Either way, you are forced to deal with a few sets of stairs on both sides of the bridge. Edited by clascell 2009-06-25 7:45 AM |

Followed your instructions today and it worked perfectly! Had an awesome ride. Probably going again tomorrow if the weather is fine. Send me a message if you'd like to try to meet up for a ride next weekend, or another one. Thanks!! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad it helped and you got a good ride. After looking at the forecast for rain this week I decided at last minute to do a longer ride today as it was such a nice morning so I headed out on 9W. Not sure which day I'll be riding out there next weekend but will let you know. |

I think I take the exact same approach and also ride the wrong way on the way back, it's the easiest. I don't actually look at the signs since I've done it so many times. I will be on long rides every weekend starting in mid July through August. Most are around 100 miles but I welcome company on any stretch of it. I think I'll be riding up to Bear Mountain and back at least once. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Terrific. I will also be riding out that way pretty much every weekend if the weather is good. Definitely next Friday or Saturday, though Sunday is unlikely due to my father's 70th birthday party. Feel free to send a PM or just set a meeting place. I come up from 42nd Street. While I'm not super fast (speed on my logs is not accurate for long rides), I'm a good climber and don't mind being dropped if I'm too slow! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You're right, of course. I sometimes like watching the heart rate monitor during my stops, though and follow recovery time. Mostly, though, I just forget. Or, more often, I start chatting with people at the rest stop and forget to start it back up again |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all -- I'm planning to heard out over the GWB starting from midtown either Friday or Saturday morning or maybe both. Anyone who wants to ride with me, feel free to to post or send me a PM. My pace is moderate - will remember to turn off my computer during breaks this time! - and I plan on a total of 30 miles or so. Hope you had a good ride, I'm out of town yet again or I would have loved to have joined. |
