Pre-race routine:

I didn't know until Tuesday that I was going to be in the Detroit area on business on Wednesday/Thursday so I thought I might as well do something on Wednesday evening. I called to find out there were plenty of spots available and that you could still register the day of the race. I loaded up the bike and gear and I was off. Got to the site, registered, got things set up and just tried to stay cool and hydrate.
Event warmup:

Swam a little but otherwise just tried staying cool
Swim
  • 24m
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was really hot out and I debated about the wetsuit but I thought I might was well wear it as I feel like I swim so much better with it on. The first half of the race seemed pretty decent but I just started getting too warm by about half way. I think I would have been much better off without it. Also, between the intense sun and my goggles fogging I couldn't really see a thing coming in. I had to adjust my course several times and I'm sure I swam a lot further than required. Also this course seemed long to me.
What would you do differently?:

I wore newer goggles but they seemed to fog up and make it so I couldn't see. I also should have just bagged the wetsuit. I just need to swim more, my swim times are just not good.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

This was a good transition for me. Wetsuit came off easy and I really had no issues. I didn't really care for the grass in the transition area as I didn't feel comfortable running with the bike. Also the mount line was in the grass which made it hard to get going.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, I am happy with this.
Bike
  • 41m 27s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.95 mile/hr
Comments:

This was like 2 different bike rides for me. I decided early on I wasn't going to push anything too hard today because it was just too hot. I was tired after my swim and I was not biking well for a while. Got passed by several people who I ended up repassing later. For some strange reason around mile 8, I started feeling really pretty good and picked up my speed quite a bit.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to do more swim/bike bricks. I did not feel real great starting out on the bike off of the swim. Based on the heat, I am not that unhappy with this bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Decent transition. Decided to not mess with socks for the run. Took a little extra time to drink some water. Did I mention it was hot out there?
What would you do differently?:

Nothing here, I was happy with my transitions.
Run
  • 40m 45s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I got off the bike and started running out of transition and along the route. Nothing felt too bad, just my normal sort of weak legs to start. Less than 1/4 mile into the run, something just hit me like a brick in my stomach. I'm sure it was the heat but I felt horrible and I started getting a headache as well. It was then I just decided it wasn't worth it to push myself through this so I started walking. I walked a good portion of the run course. I would feel fine when walking but when I would try to run again, I just would feel horrible, like physically ill. This was a horrible run...er walk
What would you do differently?:

I don't really know why this was so bad. I know the heat was a factor but something just hit me. I just decided it wasn't worth it with 90+ degree temperatures to try and push through it.
Post race
Warm down:

I didn't feel well after the race. Drank some water, tried cooling off in the lake. It wasn't until I got some food that I felt better.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat was the main factor. I think I drank enough water but something really got to me.

Event comments:

I liked the course and the setup. I have one complaint about the setup, they didn't have any water available before the race to fill water bottles. Obviously the heat was a huge factor.

I thought I saw you out there!

The heat sucked.  I walked most of the run as well.  Nice job on the bike though!

Nice race.  I thought I saw you cross the finish line.  I think the heat got to all of us.  I ended up walking a handful of times on the run myself.

Hope to see you out there again sometime.  Make sure to stop and say HI

Craig, I give you a lot of credit for finishing the race. We've had 100+ temps for a week and it really drains the energy pool. Way to Go !!
