Age Group Rank = 2/
Pre-race routine:

Got up, had a bowl of porridge with milk and honey and a big glass of water.
Event warmup:

Warmup? Didn't really do one...I was plenty warm!
Run
  • 21m 5s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out a bit too fast given the heat. I had aspirations of running 6:45 pace today but that went out the window due to the heat.

The sun was out and beating. The humidity was hanging around...probably in the 80% range at the start of the race.

I ran a comfortable enough pace, it was just the heat that got in the way.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in the heat. I've been running very early in the morning, or treadmill indoors. Neither of those really prepares you for a high heat index race.
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Nothing terminally bad about T1. I forgot to undo my Yankz laces and would regret on returning.

I also forgot to take my water belt off so my aerodynamics wouldn't be perfect on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much...just pay attention to what I'm doing!
Bike
  • 31m 12s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 21.54 mile/hr
Comments:

I had hoped to ride faster than I did. Overall I passed somewhere around 15 people. Got passed by 2 or 3.

Usually on the bike I start slow and gradually speed up. With the heat and my HR way up there from the run it took me a LONG time to get going on the bike. Wasn't until about mile 7 that I felt settled down and started to go fairly well.
What would you do differently?:

More training at race pace in the heat. Having done some reasonable riding in the heat I probably felt better than a lot of people, but it was still hard going.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

The flap at T1 not undoing my YAnkz cost me some time here. Cramping legs didn't help either.
What would you do differently?:

Undo my shoes!
Run
  • 07m 14s
  • 1 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Today was a tough day. I had to walk briefly at the 1/2 turn around but got it together enough to pass someone in the second half. Also was gaining on the 2 in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

Train in the heat!
Post race
Warm down:

Wandering around drinking mucho amounts of water!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

HEAT!

Event comments:

I think I might have mentioned the heat. I had goals for running and riding but didn't make either of them. On reflection though I went pretty well. I was a hair slower than last time, but given the climate I think that's a fair result.
