Pre-race routine:

Normal routine... bagel, coffee and V8
Event warmup:

Jogged ~1mi then got in the water and swam 600m. Arms felt heavy but they always do when warming up.
Swim
  • 03m 45s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was like a bath tub too damn hot. Felt good, got out of the water ready to start the race. I was the 3rd one in the water (10s apart) and came out first so I'm pretty sure I had one of the fastest swim splits but we'll see when the results come out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

I was a little slow in T1 this time, spent too much time with socks.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to run without socks :)
Bike
  • 29m 32s
  • 12 miles
  • 24.38 mile/hr
Comments:

So here's where the race got interesting... I got passed up by Dean King and some other guy during transition so was 3rd out on the bike. First 4mi I hung behind the other guy and then decided to overtake him and try and catch Dean. There were 3 u-turns and on every single one of them I could tell Dean was extending his lead. I averaged 288W for the ride @24.3mph that is IF I stopped biking at 12mi... instead I missed a turn and ended up doing 16.1mi not 12mi. I was furious when I figured this out but looking back I know I had a great 12mi split and have the powertap data to prove it :)
What would you do differently?:

Don't be a dumba$$ and miss turns... learn to read a map might be helpful too. I'm going to pretend this mishap didn't happen and rate the bike as 'Good' because it really was a strong bike for me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

No troubles with T2, swapped shoes, grabbed hat/race belt and garmin and was out of there.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 21m 8s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I was so pissed off after screwing up the bike I just wanted to get the race over with. I didn't push myself very hard but kept it at a respectable (for me) 7/mi.
What would you do differently?:

Not f-up the bike so badly so the run matters more :)
Post race
Warm down:

Ate lots of pizza. No beer unfortunately :(

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Screwing up the course.

Event comments:

I would have been 2nd overall even with my crappy run without the bike mishap. Ended up 2nd in my AG which surprised the heck out of me so I can't complain too much. Overall I was happy with my effort and paces, will definitely pay more attention next time if I'm out in front because there's no pack to follow!

Nice job out there, Eric.  Amazing that even with the extra 4 miles you still managed to come in
2nd! I was floored when I saw the results with my name above yours.  I'm the fortunate guy who benefitted from your "mishap" today, so thanks for handicapping it for me.  I figured something had to have happened to you on the bike like a flat or something to cause you to be 14th in the AG on the bike leg based on your time from last year.

Dude, nice freaking job!

Not to mock your pain, but I definately laughed at you missing the turn.  That is SO something I would do.

What I find funny is you swam 600 warm up for a 300 race.

You would see signs to turn if not for going "c".

Nice race...4 extra miles and still solid 2nd! Too bad it was a seminole who took #1. Oh well, that's more of an exception than the norm. Laughing

Great job out there.  I am amazed at you finishing second in the AG even with 4 extra miles.  Awesome!
