I need to get a bike helmet for my first tri and I noticed on the registration page for the Great Ohioan that there is a list of "approved helmets" but I'm unable to open it.  I'm just wondering what sort of helmet I should be looking for that meets tri standards.  Also, if you have any recommendations for helmets that you're pleased with, that would be most helpful.

Most likely they would look for a CPSC sticker on the inside, which I think just about any helmet you can buy in the US is required to have.  There are lots of good helmets out there and you don't have to spend alot.  I've had good luck with Giro.

x2 on the Giro. If you stop by your LBS they will be able to get you into something legal and more importantly properly fit. I would start there first.

Usually you are required to have a helmet approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or an equivalent agency; as mentioned, just about every helmet sold in any retail outlet will have the CPSC sticker (or the equivalent ASTM F1447 cert).

More important is to get one that fits right. You can get a cheap Bell helmet for $15 at Target, but it has a very simplistic fit adjustment, and I wasn't able to make any of their cheap helmets fit me properly. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has one of many guides to how to properly fit a bike helmet. You can expect a proper helmet to cost $40 or more at full price, but REI and similar stores have frequent sales.
