Subject: RE: question re: helmetsUsually you are required to have a helmet approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC ) or an equivalent agency; as mentioned, just about every helmet sold in any retail outlet will have the CPSC sticker (or the equivalent ASTM F1447 cert ).
More important is to get one that fits right. You can get a cheap Bell helmet for $15 at Target, but it has a very simplistic fit adjustment, and I wasn't able to make any of their cheap helmets fit me properly. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has one of many guides to how to properly fit a bike helmet. You can expect a proper helmet to cost $40 or more at full price, but REI and similar stores have frequent sales.
