Swim
Comments: I thought the 64 degree water plus the mid 40's air temp was going to feel pretty cold, so I decided to rent a full suit instead of using my sleeveless. Well, turns out that 64 degree water doesn't feel that cold when it is really cold air temp. I did not like the full suit much, not very flexible. The actual swim went okay. I started strong, but for some reason I was really tired after only 100 yards or so, so I switched to breaststroke. After a minute or so I went back to freestyle and realized my problem was that I was not exhaling underwater. For some reason I have no problem with this in the pool but I do in OW. Once I fixed this, the swim went pretty well. Couple of navigation d'ohs but otherwise okay. Best tri swim so far. What would you do differently?: Remember to breath! And use sleeveless suit. Transition 1
Comments: Since it was pretty cold out, I took extra time to dry off. Plus I put a long sleeve top on. Tried to put a stocking cap on under my helmet, realized the helmet straps were too short, so I said screw it with the cap. Also put gloves on. What would you do differently?: Pick a warmer tri so I don't need to put on the extra clothing. Bike
Comments: Bike went really well. First time using aerobars in comp and I felt great. Did not get passed by anyone on the bike (except one guy that I followed for a while after he passed me until his pedal fell off/broke - go figure?), and passed probably about 20+ people. HR was a little strange, it was high the whole time but didn't change much based on hills/terrain. Probably just elevated from swim. Also used profile aerobottle. Was okay, except the bumpy course made it tough to drink. Just had a bottle's worth of Cytomax. What would you do differently?: Not much. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty quick, no problems. Just had to get long sleeve top off. Grabbed a fuel bottle of H20 and a hammer gel. Run
Comments: The first mile was tough, took a while for my run legs to come around. I choked down a hammer gel and tried to chase with water but couldn't put down much. Also, my feet were very numb from the bike, it felt like I was running with bricks on my feet. After the first mile (~7:30) I started to feel pretty good and kept up a good pace. Did not see anyone on the run (except on the return leg). Although my time was much better than previous tri's, didn't ever feel great on the run. Probably to be expected. What would you do differently?: Put duct tape over bike shoe vents so my feet don't get as numb. Push harder. Post race
Warm down: Little stretching. Took some endurox and naprox afterwards. What limited your ability to perform faster: Wetsuit/technique on swim and cold feet on run. Event comments: Great organization, especially for first time race. Set-up puts on a quality, reasonably-priced race, hopefully I get to race some of their other races in the future. Overall Rank = 13/290
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 5/42
Got up around 5am. Went with the BrianPBN race shake (pineapple juice, Ultramet, Bananna, plus a scoop of Carbo-Pro) and a little english muffin for breakfast. Got to the race site around 6:30 and set up rack and transition area. Nice to have reserved racks for each race number group, no jam-packed crowding. Also picked up my rental wetsuit (more on that later). Weather was pretty chilly out (mid 40's) with a little wind, but I was pretty psyched for my first race of the season.
Jogged around a little, plus a little stretching. Nothing major.
