I have a double up front and 9 speed rear. It seems to me that I have the best chainline for the small front ring when I'm on the 3'rd - 4'th from smallest cog. In the big ring, it looks like an awful lot of chain torquing from the 5'th from the smallest and up. In fact, I'll usually switch back to the small chainring when I'd want to downshift from the 4'th from the smallest.

I figure that I'm saving the chain a bit from the extra side loading stress, but there's probably some efficiency gain (like fiberglass to carbon soled shoes) in there too, right?

the only position that causes much stress in a chain is small to small or big to big. all other gear combinations chains are designed to withstand.

also remember by limiting which gears you use on your cassette there is a good chance you will only wear out those few gears on your cassette and at that a lot faster. For the most part chains are designed to be able to take all that torque without issue.
