Subject: Riding in the Rain-

It looks like my first tri this weekend could be taking place in the rain and winds of up to 13 mph (which I had prayed to all things holy it would not).

I normally tend to make sure my tire pressure is at the LBS recommended 120 psi before each ride.  Rather than take a spill due to high tire pressure equaling less surface contact with the wet road surface, what level of psi is good for wet/rainy roads?

Thanks for your help-

Steve

The advice I was given when I was coming through Juvenille/junior cycling was to drop them to 90psi (i.e. 25% drop) for a properly wet surface.

Partly it depends what tyres you're using - I ride semi-slicks (they have read on the edges), so I don't need to drop tyre pressure in the wet.  If you're on full slicks then you do need to drop the presssure, and still take care round the corners (even with the drop in pressure your contact patch is only 2-3 square inches!)

Keep your tire pressure the same. You are at a much greater risk for pinch flats at too low a pressure, and there will be no significant traction benefit by dropping the pressure.

Stay off the painted stripes in the road, and watch out for metal manhole covers, grates, etc.
