I was doing a bike/run brick the other night when my calf tightened up so bad (the right one on the inside where the gastroc medial is) that I had to stop and try to rub it out for a few seconds. I continued on and it was only slightly sore the next day. I used a foam roller on it and it actually hurts worse. I tore my left gastroc 3yrs ago and am fearful of tearing this one. Any thoughts if it is something else?

I suggest you go see a decent sports med doctor.

That said - my impression?  If it feels like a tear and acts like a tear, it's probably a tear.

Normal treatment for such is no activity that could re-injure, which usally means no running but swimming and biking (no climbing out of the saddle) may be okay.

For 8 weeks or more . . .

I "injuried" my calf the same exact way about 5 years ago. The top of my soleus cramped up during a brick workout. I didn't continue to run but stopped immediately and stretched it out...it has never been the same again...it chronically gets tight/sore when I push the endurance envelope too much too soon.

I concur that you should go get it looked at ASAP to determine proper course of action.

Thank you for saying this!  I got the absolute WORST cramp in my right calf a few months ago.  It happened when I wrecked my bike actually.... when I stopped sliding/rolling my calf was locked up like I didn't think possible.  Since then, it doesn't matter what I do, it hasn't been the same.  I feel like it is on the verge of cramping all the time, and it always gets sore and tight.  I thought I was the only one...

Thanks, I have quit running for awhile and will bike tomorrow to see how it is. I have been icing, ibuprofen, etc. Pretty much the same as when I tore the other one.
Bad thing is, I have been training for my first sprint, Aug. 1 and still want to do it. I had an experienced tri-athlete tell me to just use the stepper in place of running, until it heals.

I have been battling tight calf issue for 2 years. Sometime I am good to go for weeks without any issues then bam. It takes me up to 2 week to recover and I usually lose all running gains that I have made prior to injury. I have tried about everything to prevent it from coming back. A.R.T. helps with recovery and I tape my calves on longer runs. I am going to try compression sock next.
