Pre-race routine:

Dressed in my Tri suit as soon as I got up, had to granola bars for breakfast. Nutritionist wanted pree and post event blood test (130 pre).
Drove to the event 1 hour drive time.
Took bike and crate into Transition area for set up. They had racks for skinny and fat tires. Mine was medium so I ended up using the fat tire rack. Second from the Bike out right on the end. Great position for bike out and in but not for the swim in and run out.
Family arrived so I got to chat with them for a bit and showed them where to stand.
Swam about 15 yards in open water before race should have don a lot more A LOT MORE.
Sat by myself for a couple of minutes to center myself and got into the water for my wave.
Event warmup:

Gentle stretching and too short of an open water swim
Swim
  • 08m 25s
  • 200 yards
  • 04m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water swim.Should have done a lot more open water swimming.
a wet suit would also have helped quite a bit.
Took first strokes and came up for first breath and outright panic.
Did a combination of walk, side stroke, and the occasional free style.
What would you do differently?:

Any open water swimming would have helped. Need to do a more, a lot more before September.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Run from swim to T1 was on a pretty steep incline. No problem getting to the bike because I had made sure of landmarks.
Put helmet and glasses on as soon as I got to the bike and clipped in.
Crate less transition area, so had to sit on ground to dry feet and put on socks. Seemed slow. I made sure I had plenty of baby powder in the shoes and socks so that would help dry my feet, and made gearing up much faster.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 38m 12s
  • 7.4 miles
  • 11.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Good run. Did not kill myself wanted to make sure I had enough left for the run. Passed one person in my wave, and was passed by about half the women in the next wave.
What would you do differently?:

Need to do a lot more road work. Spinning is fine, but I need more time doing actual hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Thank God for toe cages. Dismounted and jogged into T2 Rack was second one in. Kick stand down bik in rack, very quick and smooth. Grabbed a quick drink, put on hat and jogged to run out.
What would you do differently?:

Wouldn't do anything different, maybe hydrate on the bike.
Run
  • 20m 40s
  • 1.9 miles
  • 10m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran most of the way, had to walk after the half way point twice, once for about 100 yards and near the end for about 20, good kick sprint at the end.
What would you do differently?:

More road work. Tread mill is good and I have greatly improved my endurance and performance, but I need to hit the road more than once a week on Sunday mornings.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk and hydrate. (Post race reading 137)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more time in all areas. This performance was much better than my first but I still need to keep on working

Event comments:

Great Race. Well organized, and post Race food was great, catered, Roast beef and two Pasta salads as well as Lettace salad. plus drinks.
All the volunteers and Race personnel were very friendly and helpful.
