Subject: how to handle hunger after hard workouts!

Usually a day or two after a really hard workout, I get FAMISHED!

I have my first tri in 6 weeks, which means I'm doing a lot of really hard (or at least really hard for me) workouts right now, which means I'm ALWAYS hungry!

I eat a lot of protein, fiber, healthy fats, and drink tons of water (or at least try), but some days it just does not stop!

Any advice on how to handle those days where you just want to eat everything in sight???

(BTW - nutrition log is not 100% correct, calories are, but I put in a lot of custom foods, so the breakdown of carbs/fat/protein is not right - a lot of my meat/cheeses are in custom foods)

I have those days all the time! The best thing to do is plan for them. make sure you have sensible options available so that way you don't down 2000 calories on one snack. If your hungry eat, that's what your body needs in order to fuel these workouts. Eventually once your metabolism figures out what's going on you won't feel as famished all the time.

my rule of thumb is if I'm hungry I'll eat something. If I'm not hungry I don't.

I agree with the above two. Its not like your eating for no reason, your body needs the food to keep moving.

Planning ahead is a great idea. When I cook, I plan for at least 2 days worth of food. Sounds like you are eating healthy, and having healthy snacks around makes it easier to continue to eat healthy.

agreed, if you are that hungry, either something is very wrong, or you simply need food.

when i start up harder training loads again each year i am hungry a lot the first few weeks, once it becomes routine i can go hours without thinking about food.

I drink smoothies made with yogurt, fruit, powdered protein, milk or water.

Also,I munch on baby carrots, mushrooms, cauliflower, red & orange bell peppers, fat free popcorn, and fruit during the day to keep away the hungries.

That way I am not filling up or grabbing bad stuff to keep me full.  And I do make sure I am drinking enough fluids all day, some days easier said then done I know

just as my own reply (:-p) - I've tried the last couple days eating edamine (sp?  soy beans) earlier on in the day.  The raw ones - just shell and eat.  They're very tasty, healthy, and have REALLY helped in the "I want to eat everything" phases

They also make tasty dried ones with salt!

Agree with the others, if you're hungry, your body is asking for calories it probably needs.  The more you can eat filling foods like with good amounts of fiber and some healthy fat, you'll be more easily satiated.

I like to fill up on soup, and some foods that are high in fiber.

Bananas and Clementines are about 100 calories apiece. After a hard workout, I'll just suck down as many bananas or clementines as I want, and fairly easy to "log the calories" on these.
