2 extra peices from my bar end shifters?????

So i was changing out my Aerobars and had to remove my bar end shifters.  Well when i tried to put the shifters back together, there was 2 peices (Black metal e-clip or c-clip looking things) that i cannot for the life of me figure out.  I found a few spots the could go into but couldn't figure it out.  I was already in a bad mood so i stopped messing with it...  anyone know what i'm talking about?  Thanks in advance.
