Well, eventually I would like to have 2 pairs of shoes in my arsenal (1 for hardball road 1 for trail) and I'm pretty sure what shoe I would like to purchase as far as trail running.  But, I really don't know where to go or what shoe is considered "top of the market" right now as far has the solid surface running shoe... Any suggestions?

Don't do the 'top of the market', they won't necessarily be the right shoe for you. Go to a specialty running store where they do a proper shoe fit. I think there are 1 or 2 down your way or, if you're up in Cary, stop in and see me.

Saucony has a shoe advisor on their website that explains a little about what to look for.  Even if you go with another brand it's still helpful.
