Overcast
Total Time = 2h 51m
Overall Rank = 446/1445
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 26/72
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30. Had some coffee and bagels. Left for race at 4:30
Event warmup:

Short run and some swimming.
Swim
  • 33m 43s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went OK. Did not get caught up in the bumping at the start by staying to the right side. New tinted goggles made the first leg going into the sun manageable. I passed some people from earlier waves and was passed by some from the wave behind. Actual swim time to the beach was 32:40 which seemed a bit slow. Reports are that the course may have been 150-200 meters long and that seems about right based on what I expected to swim.
What would you do differently?:

More training, but I was satisfied given how little I train.
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

My rack was on the opposite side from the swim in, making for a long run. Everything went smoothly. I'm always amazed how people come to a stop at the mount line. I ran my bike past those people and hopped on while I was moving.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 22m 41s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 18.94 mile/hr
Comments:

This went about as I expected. A couple miles into the bike a guy on a mountain bike went blowing by me and all the other racers. I was thinking this guy was a stud to be racingso fast on a MTB, but then he turned off into a housing area so it looks like he was just sprinting by for fun. I did fairly well except for the big climb up Old Stage. I just haven't done enough biking this year to be strong on that steep of a hill. I was bummed by the speed limit on the first part of the downhill and by not carrying speed into the next section. It all went OK and I passed a bunch of people and was passed by some as well.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more. No doubt about it, lack of miles is not a good training plan.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

My rack was near the bike in/run out and that was helpful. I decided to put on socks for the run since my running flats are so thin and I wanted extra protection from the rockson the trail.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 52m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt decent on the run and for a change I actually passed far more people than I was passed by. This was by far the best I've run on this course. The heat was a factor, but it got overcast and spared us from the baking sun and there was a small breeze in a few places that felt good. Even with wearing socks I still had some painful encounters with some sharp little rocks every now and then. I'll wear different shoes for the long course next month.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank a couple bottles of water. Then I headed to the beer tent to meet some friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of quality swim and bike training.

Event comments:

This is the largest triathlon in Colorado and always a good event. I hadn't raced here for about 6 years and it's better than ever. The swim course being long was unfortunate and turned my result from being a PR into a PW.
