Subject: Weight loss during biking
Last weekend I went on a long bike ride - 70 miles, 6000 feet of altitude gain (max altitude ~9,000 feet), took me about 5.5 hours. I weighed myself in the morning before I left - 170 pounds - and then when I returned - 164 pounds. During the ride I drank 3 liters of water, 1 liter of Cytomax, and 1 liter of Gatorade. I had 2 gels, 2 Cliff Nectar bars, and 2 ProBars - about 1000 calories.

I assume the losses were from muscle and liver glycogen and the water that goes along with it and through sweat - I sweat a lot, but 6 pounds seems like a LOT of weight loss. Is this common? Do others experience similar weight loss?

The vast majority of that weight loss will have been water.

3.5% of bodyweight is a tad high, but not alarming.  Most things I've read say that 2% or 3% is fine, but that after that amount you begin to feel the effects of dehydration and performance decreases.  But 3.5% is not major -- not even close to where you are in any real danger.  The better shape you are in, they say, the higher eight loss you can sustain without loss of performance.
